Phew Christmas is Over and a Few Steem things...

@elgeko made this art... I think it is funny!

Christmas is not my favorite holiday for a lot of reasons, but it does bring me together with my family and that is a good thing.

I always feel a sense of relief when it is over. The shortest days are behind me now and I can trudge through the winter months with my eyes on Spring!

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas.

A little Steem Drama on Christmas? Why not.

I want to wrap up my thoughts on dstor and dcommerce and move on. As you might know some drama broke out around this topic and while I commented several times, I was busy and unable to respond to all the comments on that post which got really out of control.

https://steemit.com/busy/@whatsup/a-quick-little-note-for-all-of-you-delegating-to-dstors

Like many others I would love to have a peer to peer market like ebay that accepted crypto. I even think it is a great idea to give people an incentive to use it via a token.

I am not even totally opposed to using the reward pool fund to provide this incentive. In my mind, it just needed to be clearer what they were funding, how they were funding it and how it was going to work.

When I made my post about the project I assumed it would go like most of my posts, receive some good discussion and be mostly ignored by the big players. It was the over-reaction of the dstors team that turned the entire thing into a drama. After the fall-out, I will not be making a post about the white paper and I think it is unlikely I will feel a need to discuss the situation at all beyond saying please do a bit of due dilegence prior to funding projects. The team has now broken up and if you are going to support one or the other, I encourage you to ask questions and understand the project.

The ability to communicate an idea is not the same thing as the ability to build it.

Due Diligence before putting money in... If you don't do that, odds are you will have no recourse if the project goes astray.

Enough said.

I'm left looking around at Steem and wondering who we are and what we are trying to accomplish here.

My next posts will be focused on trying to find a new vision. We do not reward engaging content that well. We aren't really even trying to onboard people to a social media site. (Some apps are, but not Steem as a whole)

More and more of the reward pool is going to fund projects and I am not really sure that is a bad thing.

I'm thinking Steem isn't a social network at all. It is a group of Apps. Some of those apps continue to focus on Content, while others are going in different directions.

I think the era of Free Votes for the concept of rewarding content will continue to slowly fade. We need to find a new vision as that vision is naturally fading away. More and more of the reward pool is being delegated and funding various projects and then redistributed back to some users. Most of it has nothing to do with content.

That doesn't have to be a problem. It could be a natural development.

Here are my first thoughts about it and that's what I want to focus on in 2019...

How do we regroup, rebrand and move foward...

Here is one thought: (just a thought)

People should now pick their apps
and if you like social media, join a social media app and onboard and market that
We should not be trying to onboard people to Steem
Steem is nothing and it is everything
We should not be training people on steem
We should not be marketing Steem to "People"
This is why it is so confusing
Nobody tries to onboard you to EOS
Steem is not a social media platform it is a platform for apps
Let the apps figure out what their plan is and how to reward and retain endusers.
The Steem Reward pool might be better allocated to supporting dapps.

This ends all the fighting about reward pool rape, quality what have you. It seems we need to have SMTs for this vision.

Also, it seems I am starting to agree with @therealwolf who recently urged us to consider spending steem on recruiting developers.

https://steemit.com/steem/@therealwolf/real-talk-steem

I disagreed and wrote a post declaring it... I have to say, I am reconsidering..

What are your thoughts?

For now, just keep doing what you are doing, if it is working.
We have a lot of work and restructuring ahead...
2019 is the year of rebuilding
2018 we found out what was broken in the vision
We found out who has weak hands
Who can't adapt
Who wasn't in the game in the first place
2019 - regroup, rebuild, rebrand and move forward!

Onward...

@whatsup,
More drama, less STEEM print! Am I correct? Anyway I wish this might rise, atleast to $1 margin! It's hard to see this coin at this level! Anyway enjoy this vacation time so well!

Cheers~

Yes $1 sounds nice right now

What I like about you is your balanced and measured opinions and the ability to change them based on new information or just further thought. That's rare in this world where people want to be right all the time and will defend their position to a fault even if they know they may not be right.

I just wanted to say that.

I'm not sure where the platform is going, I'm just a little fish who likes to write and share, so I defer to people like yourself and hope that the platform survives, and thrives, because I enjoy it. I have my brother @tarazkp to thank for being here but I stay because I find value and enjoyment.

I feel the same way about Christmas as you too it seems...Anyway, have a great 2019.. Design and create it the way you want it to be.

I appreciate the feedback and often enjoy reading tarazkp and you!

I think in new technology one has to be open to changing the vision and the plan. Steem is naturally developing it's own vision and direction.

I agree. Often I get a little annoyed at lack of engagement with my posts and tarazkp gives me an attitude adjustment reminding me that it's all quite new still and just to have fun and enjoy myself. That helps to keep potential rants to a minimum. 😆

Thanks for reading my posts occasionally. Much appreciated. 😉

I'll make my reply short.

  1. you are right, I agree with you.

  2. people should ditch steemit.com like the plague. The only thing good about them left is the API and whatever slow paced development they're doing. Steemit.com is hurting adoption. They are not worth the 0% beneficiary fee anymore.

  3. it doesn't matter what apps (other than steemit.com really) people are using. It matters more that people are using apps and dapps.

  4. this bear market will flush out sub par projects. IMO the only thing holding steem up is us the user community (btw not that many of us left). We as users now need to do our part.

  5. developers come only if there is enough incentive. Currently it looks like there isn't. Otherwise Utopian would have long surpassed Gitcoin as a software development market. This is by no fault of Utopian, it's just that it's built on a blockchain that is currently not as attractive as Ethereum to developers.

I will try to get back around to answer this, but mostly... I agree.

My next posts will be focused on trying to find a new vision.

cool!....

The great thing is that the protocol has the flexibility to do it all if we het the backing behind it. However, in order to improve adoption I agree that the DApp have to take more ownership of the onboarding and retention but it will also only lead to more of the circle of vote you describe. Unless new DApps come and with it bring in more capital, the size of the pie will not increase; instead, it will be more distributed...

I saw a good poet (somebody I looked upto here) give up the fight and power down his account over what he called 'drama'. It made me sad. Sad we are losing a community we shouldn't be losing but in a way I also understand him.

Currently I don't do much other than author what I can and share my thoughts on posts that bring out 'our' diverse opinions like this. It's here I draw the strength to hang on and wait for 2019. Better probably will come then.

I missed the drama, I was busy dealing with small children who didn’t want to eat Christmas dinner. ;) A new vision is a good thing, and I hope everyone involved with projects on the blockchain can keep moving forward together, wherever possible. Also, yay for Christmas being over! Bring on 2019. 🎇🎆🎇

Haha, boy do I remember those days.

Here we come 2019!

I started writing a reply to this, but then decided I had more than a comments worth to say :) so I made a post
https://steemit.com/steem/@midlet/what-is-steem

For me and the informationwar people, the value the blockchain brings is that it is really difficulty to censor our content. I really like that aspect of it.

With all of the censorship being done via the oligopoly tech firms and social media platforms, I would figure that one of the biggest projects to ever be utilized would be using steemit to access the Steem blockchain. The steemit team is really super focused on getting SMTs out instead though.

If I was in charge of everything that steemit was doing and working on, one of the biggest things would be to fill that void of onboarding new people.

If there is a project out there similar to busy/steempeak/mspsteem that is more focused on free speech rights and anti-censorship then I would be all about that. It seems as though nobody is creating such a thing... No idea why not.

I totally agree this should/could be a huge focus for us! Great messages, a real need and I wish we would focus on it also.

It may be a while til I am a big deal like you where my comments could cause any drama;). Until then, I am authoring, engaging, evangelizing and supporting the people and dapps I believe in. Small upvotes and delegations is all I have for now and I am watching the leaders and influencers for areas to build my influence and strategy.

Things will change as crypto rebounds and I am just grinding TIL then so I am ready.

Perfect plan!!! Keep on doing what you are doing Zekepickleman!

Easy to do when following leaders like you. Maybe I can help by cheering in your corner and helping you see the positive side of the next round of minnows making strides as you fight the big battles.
