Two Months in Having "Sky" as My First Pet Dog

Today is exactly two months since I adopted my husky puppy "Sky", which is also the first dog I ever owned. To be very honest, when I adopted Sky I didn't know exactly what I was signing up for. The past two months have taught me what truly goes into owning a living, breathing, eating, pooping, chewing, destructing and high-energy being!

I definitely underestimated how much energy goes into looking after a dog, especially the husky breed. "Sky" is quite attention-seeking and needs lots of exercise. I take her out for a walk 2 or 3 times a day and minimum for an hour each time. "Sky" is still a 7 months old puppy and might need more exercise when she grows bigger so I have to start thinking of running or exploring hiking trails or something to cater for those needs.

Besides the walk, training is also essential for "Sky" to learn how to be confident and well behaved. Luckily "Sky" loves her treats so I have been quite successful in training her some basic commands like "sit-stay" however recall when off leash is still a pain as she gets distracted very easily with other dogs around.

Sky has her own unique personalities and is very intelligence. She always comes up with new ways to get what she want and tries to challenge you by testing the limits of the rules. So being firm and consistent when training every day becomes super important.

Having "Sky" around is a bit like having a baby, in a sense that any holidays, weekend trips or spontaneous nights out almost becomes impossible or require planning. One thing I was not fully prepared for is how much Sky hates being left alone. The first few times I left her alone at home, she basically howled the whole house down and destroyed almost everything in it! The vet seems to think "Sky" has separation anxiety issues. I am still working on this one but it's a long haul.

Owning "Sky" is definitely more work than I expected as well as more frustrating and probably more time-consuming. But I do not regret bringing home this wonderful four-legged friend. Also nothing can replace the joy of your dog greeting you when you come home from outside!

He looks bigger than 2 months dog:) But it is still cute like a small puppy!

Oh I meant I got "Sky" for two months but her age is actually 7 months now, lol.

Yes, much work ahead for you. Huskies need to run & run & run & run. I have met quite a few husky owners who have a hard time with all that energy. They are bred to pull sleds all day & will go nuts without getting that energy out. Good for you for putting in the work. You could try giving her a backpack to carry for a job or getting her to pull stuff around to help burn the anxiety

Thanks @ceattlestretch for the tips! Putting a backpack on Sky is an interesting idea, perhaps I will give it a try in a few months' time when she becomes an adult.

Ya ive been meaning to try it with my mastiff, but he’s kind of lazy anyway 😂 The process I heard was to have no weight at first, & then you can add in increments of sand or rice into the sides so it’s balanced & non traumatic 👍

Time flies when you are having fun. Thank you for all your effort. It is a lot of work but worth it. Do you stay at home/work from home that you can take her on so many walks? Someone I know has a husky and he bit their little dog to death, but I was so cross with her because they never take the dog for a walk - he has to play by himself and he got frustrated. Now they have luckily woken up and is training him etc. So glad Sky found you - you are an awesome owner.

Thanks @anneke! Yes I stay at home at the moment, trying to provide the best I could for Sky in terms of training and exercising. I really hope she can grow to become a happy and obedient husky, lol.

have you seen any of those videos of people filming their dogs, or putting a gopro camera on them while they leave for work, to see what they get up to when they're gone? lol pretty funny stuff sometimes

Yes, most of them are hilarious and I enjoyed watching them, lol.

Have you seen any of the "dog vlogging" videos where the people actually mount their GoPro to their camera when they take them for walks like this one? They are pretty funny and offer a gods eye view of how they see their adventures, there a bunch of GoPro dog harnesses on the market now too that let you do it.
