Hunting part 1: Why do I hunt?

I love hunting! There is a lot of reasons for that. But let first define what hunting is for me: Hunting is not just chasing animals for food and trophies that is mere 10 % of it. 90 % of hunting is something else and I will elaborate that in my reasons belove.
reason: Nature
While on the hunt I get to experience great outdoors. Spending all that time on hunts it gives a person more intimate knowledge of inner workings of nature and ways everything moves in harmony. And you also get to see things that put your reasoning and knowledge of nature in conundrum - like fox stalking a hare for 15 minutes just to sit up and observe the hare after closing in kill reach.reason:Nature conservation
To get one needs to give. Nowadays if one wants to hunt he first needs to take care of his hunting grounds. My hunting grounds are mostly big plots of farming land and few scattered small forests. During summer and fall animals can feed them selfs on the abundance of crops in the fields but during winter and spring when fields are harvested and freshly sown there is not much food to be found so hunters need to provide food for wildlife so it doesn't starve. Summer also carries danger for wildlife in form of drought. Natural water sources are scarce at best in the part of Croatia where I hunt. So keeping watering holes full of fresh water is almost a daily task.reason:Workout
One gets a lot of exercise while hunting and doing hunting related things. For example, usual pheasant and hare hunt for me averages 20 kilometers of walking on not so easy terrain. Also hauling 40 kg bags of feed for couple kilometers trough snow can be a grueling task.reason:Helping out fellow humans
There are no more natural predators in my part of Croatia to pray on wild boars. Because of that their population is exploding and they are wreaking havoc on crops. Keeping population of boars on acceptable levels is prerogative for every hunter in Croatia.reason:Good and healthy food
Game meat is much healthier because is leaner and has more good stuff in comparison to farm raised meat. Ad the taste is so much better.reason:Fun

I never did hunt but have a lot of relatives who are hunters and they enjoy it very much. They come back from there hunting trips usually empty handed but as they say , it is part of the hunt. Where do you hunt ?
My hunting grounds are in the east of Croatia. Flatlands full of farming land. And yes getting back from hunt empty handed is a usual occurrence. And where are yours relatives hunting?
