Daily Birding 📷 134
Hummingbird
Some of the excitement of birding is coming across unexpected species. This hummingbird was a delightful surprise. It was far, far up in a tree! I'm sure it made for a great vantage point while resting. I watched it sit and look around for a while before I moved down along the path.
I think it may be a Black-chinned Hummingbird, but without a proper identification, I will not claim it is that species.
This Saturday we are heading up to one of my favorite places. It is a camp we attend in the summer and we are going this weekend to help get things ready for the season. They put out hummingbird feeders and it is an extremely popular stopping point. I am excited to get great photographs of hummingbirds to share this year!
I will be sharing the winners of the impromptu contest tomorrow! :)

I love hummingbirds. Oddly enough, if you sit close enough to watch them, they will sit still for a while to preen. I've found that some birds, like bushtits, are hard to see even when there's a bunch of them right next to your head because they always bounce around in the inside of the tree. Hummingbirds generally seem to be out on the outer branches. I guess they can because they're really light - and birds of prey seem to ignore them. At least, that's my theory. :-)) Keep up the good work. Always enjoyable.
I'll have to see if I can catch them preening when I see them! :)
I've actually seen a hummingbird give a small-medium sized bird of prey a run for its money. Because hummingbirds are so agile, they are very hard to catch, and they can stab with their beaks, which can make them quite pesky to anyone who bothers them.
