We're Making Steem Flash Cards!

Steem and Steemit come with some BIG questions! There's a lot to digest when explaining this platform to prospective users. For newcomers and experienced Steemians alike, these FAQ's can be tough to answer in a quick, approachable and easy way. So we thought it would be fun to create some flash cards! And we need your help...

What are your Top 10 Questions?

We hear a lot of the same questions every day when it comes to onboarding new users within the @sndbox incubator, hosting workshops and meetups in New York City. After a while (and some trial and error) we've found that it helps to have a quick 1-2 sentences for each answer. Those words and illustrations need to be clear and relatable otherwise your question-asker loses attention or becomes confused. Disruptive technology is tough to describe!

So, everyone, what are the Top 10 Questions you hear from people when introducing Steemit?

@sndbox will be curating your comments and feedback. Share some strategy (though if you do) make sure to keep it simple!

What Happens Next...

Over the next week we'll create a compilation Top 10 Questions complete with illustrations and clear answers. Our goal is to compile a resource of 10 shareable flash cards that will help newcomers better understand the new world that they are diving into. Once complete, we'll post these top 10's to the world and for YOU to use!

As you brainstorm your TOP questions, take a look at our Steem infographics from a few weeks back. We’ll be using this type of illustration style for the flash cards as well. Steem on!

Interesting idea 🤔 already love designs you made👌...

Regarding some questions I would like to be answered as a newbie:

  • Where money comes from?
  • Who decides on value of STEEM?
  • Difference between STEEM & BITCOIN?
  • Difference between STEEM, STEEM DOLLAR, STEEM POWER?

These were trouble for me to understand
Also basic things as these ones could be good:

  • What is Steemit & how does it work?
  • How is Steemit different from other social platforms?

These would be my top questions as newbie. Realy curious to see what you will come up with 👊

Great questions @kurtgrey, thanks for sharing! Maybe we need a "Newbie" Flash Card deck and a series of 2 others... Intermediate and Expert for the more nuanced questions. That would be a fun series :)

Love the idea of flash cards.

Here are few questions for ya

1.how steemit is different from steem
2.does bitcoin value effect steem value
3.how are the rewards generated and distributed.

These were few questions i get asked all the time.

Not only will the flashcards stick to memory but will be easier to circulate and present to new audience.

During my time of promoting steem, I get questions like how do I withdraw the sbd to real cash, is posting on steemit restricted to only writing?

Oh that's an interesting one - is Steemit.com just for writing? - it's very common to confuse Steem with Steemit.com and all of the other media applications built upon Steem (dtube, utopian, steemshot, dsound, dlive etc.) That's a lot to unpack! We'll definitely make a flash card for it. Thanks @rejoiceavl.

You are right, there's a whole lot of extensions to steemit now as you mentioned, a newbie can not really understand fully how they work, detailed illustration is needed. Thanks @sndbox

Great questions @theversatileguy! Likewise, we get those ALOT. The bitcoin value question is very interesting. Thanks for sharing :)

These cards can shine for thanks giving this year.

We're prepping for the 2018 holiday season early :)

It would have been nice to have these flash cards ready in time for Thanksgiving in 2017!

Few questions people ask me pretty often:

  • Where does the money come from?
  • What is stopping people from making money from other people's work
    • Intentional (plagiarism)
    • Unintentional (posting your favorite artist's music and making money on the post)
  • If it's so great, why don't more people use it?
  • Why is the website crap? (lol)
  • How do I take my money out?

btw I have never told someone about steem and they asked about the technology. Similarly, I have never heard anybody care about how Facebook or Youtube works from a technical standpoint, they care about how to use. I would argue that the first question "What's the difference between a blockchain and a cryptocurrency" is not important to the majority of people we are trying to market steem(it) to.

By that same logic, I don't think anybody cares about the difference between which database Facebook uses to store its content and the API that is used to get that data. It's just so irrelevant to the usage of Facebook.

Abstraction - a process of hiding details of implementation in programs and data

This makes sense from the comparison of Facebook... or even the internet. (We don't ask why and what tech provides infrastructure for the web). But because a "currency" is involved with Steemit.com, everyone seems to ask us... what technology makes this possible? Which leads into blockchain. That's just our experience :)

Ultimately (ideally) we should all stop using the word blockchain. Hopefully some day soon, we'll get there.

A very great post! Most questions I hear and see on this platform are all related to funds. One of the newbies I brought asked a question, he said "How does steemit get its money?" another one asked "How can I be like the very top people on steemit?". I find some of these questions hard to reply. Thanks for this great piece of writing.

Both great questions @osigbhemeh. It's interesting because there's always a functional question (money related) and a social question (how do I succeed). We'll do our best to address both sides :)

Much thanks @sndbox, I'll be waiting patiently to see them.

there are the questions I got asked more when talking to prospective members.

What do Steemit gets from us (I think that is the same as, where does the money comes from?)

Am not a good writer. Will I still succeed on Steemit?

Will I have to pay anything?

What is cryptocurrency?

You mentioned voting power, doesn't it mean those who join early will get richer? I may not stand a chance.

As I gets more, I'll bring them here. Thanks

Thanks for sharing these @lordjames! "Will I have to pay anything" is a really important one. Most new users think that it costs them $ to upvote content. But it's cost-free!

Thanks first of all @sndbox for coming up with this superb tool aimed at adding value to the steem ecosystem..
I am so concerned about innovation, projects and systems that can improve business relationships around the world.
So my question is this:

  • How can an individual develop a project and equally run that project on the steem blockchain for the benefit of all steemians?.
  • What are the measures / processes involved in developing a project that will be accepted/absorbed by the steemit community.

Thanks.

The idea of flash card is a welcome development that way new comers will always get fast, short and efficient answers to their so many question. It is not without a doubt that steemit is cumbersome and not easy to understand the first few days or even weeks depending on how slow or fast a learner the Steemian is. Here are your some questions for you.

  1. How is curation reward shared among authors and curators ?
  2. What caused the amount in dollars on a post to reduce?
  3. What is the difference between steem power and steem?
  4. What does power down mean?
  5. What is bandwith
  6. How do I convert my sbd to money?
  7. What is active key used for?
  8. What is the full meaning of SBD?
  9. How does steemit work?
  10. How do I know the right tags to use for a post?

Great list @zizymena, thanks for sharing :)

@sndbox

Where does the money come from?
Is it something legal?

These are the most common ones and some of them still think that bitcoin or other cyrptocurrencies can't be used as real money, then I show them all the things I have thanks to steemit and they believe in me :)

greetings from @teachblogger, proud member of the family :)

EXCELLENT IDEA OF PRESENTING THE CARDS, SOME OF THE COMMON QUESTIONS THAT HAVE ARRIVED ME

  • WHERE DO I GET A GOOD MATERIAL TO PUBLISH?
  • WHAT SHOULD I DO TO MAKE MY STEEMIT ACCOUNT PROFITABLE?
  • HOW TO REMOVE MY MONEY IN CASH?
  • WHERE STEEMIT GETS THE MONEY TO PAY?
  • WHAT LABELS SHOULD BE USED WHEN PUBLISHING?
AND AS WELL AS THESE OTHERS MORE.
