An Idiots view of Ender's Game -The novel by Orson Scott Card- no real spoilers

in #books6 years ago

Ender's Game was originally released in 1977 by Orson Scott Card as a short story.
Later in 1985 Orson Scott Card expanded the story and published it as a full novel, he has said that the reason for his expansion of the story was to make it suitable to be a preceding book a story he was working on at the time called Speaker for the Dead.

Ender's Game follows Andrew "Ender" Wiggim through his tumultuous childhood from age 6 where he is a third child in a world where families can only have two children, the reason his parents were given permission for a third child is because Ender's siblings showed so much promise but had unwanted character traits (his brother Peter was sadistic and manipulative and could not be controlled if he did not want to be, his sister Valentine had too kind a heart to do what might be needed to be done.)The military was hoping with allowing a third that the child would be somewhere between the two, so from Ender's earliest memory he knew he existed solely to be taken away to battle school and then into the military.

This knowledge of his life already being determined for him, shapes his whole being. When he is finally taken to battle school, we see the internal struggles he faces of missing his sister and dealing with being rejected from his peers while also being a good soldier all while only still being a child. In this way the character is relatable, in that he acts not how he wants to, but how he feels he should.

During the time at battle school we see Ender develop his tactical skills by being put under pressure and from his ability to think differently and not be stuck into the normal way of doing things. We also see his personality develop into someone that is wise and eventually into someone that accepts his own self imposed isolation. To eventually someone that is weary and is doing what he does to just get through the day.

In his free time that Ender has we see him playing an adventure game that is directly influenced by Enders own thoughts, this eventually goes into the thought that Ender is just like his brother Peter... Evil and sadistic. We see this game evolve and follow Enders development. The story in the game is a great monologue of the whole story.

The character development and relationships we see in this novel are superbly written and well thought out. Some of the other characters that are not Ender, you feel for and want more expansion on, he even makes your feel for the Buggers (bad aliens) by the end of it, luckily Orson Scott Card has delivered on some of this by creating other novels that follow some of the other characters.

The universe that Orson Scott Card created with this book is amazing and has so much potential for expansion, which is why it is great that he has written more novels and expanded the story way beyond Ender's Game.

The book is a great book, the recommended way of consumption is actually through audio book form. Orson Scott Card has said that he believes it to be the best way to experience it.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in sci-fi or just a book with great relateable characters and awsome character development.

While I'm no longer a fan of the author, I still love this book. One of my favorite sci-fi titles! Solid review!

May i ask what turned you off the author?

Card is very publicly vocal about his sociopolitical beliefs, which I disagree with. I still enjoy his writing from the late 70s through the early 90s. Don't get me wrong, I take the writing at its own value. But knowing more about the author prevents me from reading and watching his more recent works.
