Why I Hated Star Wars Under Disney

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

When George Lucas sold his beloved Star Wars franchise in 2012 to The Walt Disney Company for more than 4 billion dollars, I thought he was too greedy and throwing a tantrum for having his ego hurt by legions of Star Wars fans who bashed him in cyberspace over the years for his directorial work on the prequels.

Yeah, George may suck on the directorial job on the prequels. He should have given the job to better directors but you cannot deny that his vision was grand and epic in scope but just poor in execution.

Now the Star Wars sequels and anthology films produced under the management of Disney were well-received by the public but somehow I loved them less than the original and prequel trilogies under Lucas. Here's why:

1. The vehicle designs in the sequels are still the same!

The prequel X-wing fighter's predecesor looked liked this:

Which evolved into the original trilogy iconic X-wing fighters' design.

The sequels' X-wing...the storyline is 30 years later and the changes were only 2 engines that split during attack mode! No major improvement.

Here's another sample focusing on the enemy TIE fighters:

The prequels' TIE fighter's predecesor were still the good guys' V-Wing Starfighter then.

Which evolved into the original trilogy's Imperial TIE fighter.

Now the sequels' TIE fighter design sucks. Where the hell are the changes? I can't see them. You mean the antenna and 2 man crew it carries?

Conclusion: I'll never agree to those crappy designs shown in the sequels. When Lucas was managing things, there's always something new in every movie.

2. New storm trooper designs are horrible.

The prequels had amazing clone trooper designs and variations.

They evolved into imperial storm troopers - the original designs from the original trilogy.

The sequels' First Order troopers design suck because it doesn't look as menacing and imposing as before.

Conclusion: Talk about lazy costume design, Disney should have hired the designers of the Halo video games Spartan armors.

3. The color palette of the sequel films is too bluish.

Did you notice the original and prequel trilogies had a warm golden tone to them while the sequels look too bluish?

4. The first sequel ending had terrible camera work.

The final scene should not have the drone camera revolving around the actors. It should be damn stationary like the final shots of the original and prequel trilogy films.

5. The sequels' fight choreography is horrible.

The sequels' villain, Kylo Ren, wields a lightsaber like a thug with a big stick. Wasn't he supposed to be trained in the dark side of the Force to be awesome in lightsaber combat like all dark Force users like his grandpa Darth Vader and Darth Maul?

Now enough ranting. What do you think about the Star War sequels? Should George Lucas never have sold his franchise to Disney? Please comment and give your opinions.

"I came, I saw...I just posted it"

Sort:

Was born 1985. First saw original three Star Wars films during the Special Editions release in cinemas in 1997, and then saw the Phantom Menace two years later. I love the OT. But then fell in love with the prequels. I am liking the sequels. I think I like the cartoons even more.
.
My favorite trilogy is the prequels. Second is the original, and third is the sequel trilogy. But this sequel (third) trilogy is still not over yet. So, it has potential. I want to see old Luke Skywalker fight.
.
People disliked how cold, emotionally, the prequels were, but that is how things were. I do not call it bad acting and I do not blame it on George Lucas. I have been making videos and movies as an actor and writer and director since 1996 and I think Lucas did what he wanted for the prequels and it is his story and he does not have to get us to like his story. Anakin Skywalker was not a bad actor or character. He did awkward things because he was awkward. That was the point. People were stuck in the middle as the Emperor clouded everything. It effected everything. As far the designs go, the sequels are probably lacking like you said.

Yeah, you took the words outta my brain, buddy.

I agree on your opinions here but my biggest gripe with TFA is Rey able to do everything, fix a ship better than Han & Chewy that had multiple decades experience with, her vast knowledge of weapon skills fighting hand to hand, ability to use the force instantly and repel Kylo who is the best of the Knights of Ren, and her ability to fight with a lightsaber and best Kylo before receiving any training. It spits in the face of practice and time that all Jedi including Anakin & Luke all needed to be that good. You can't be a Jedi Knight / Master by picking up a lightsaber through osmosis.

Yeah, she could even pilot an old ship even thougn she was stuck on that desert planet her whole teen life!

I have to disagree. I was born in the late 70's and grew up with the originals.
Playing with the action figures is a cherished memory.
I loved TFA.
It's a big call, but it's my favourite so far.

Your opinion is noted and valuable.

Hope you're feeling better, mate.

After last month's hospital stay, yes.

Totally agree with you. The only interesting thing in the force awakens was Kylo Ren and the knights of Ren ... BB8 was also good and that's it. Story and design terrible .

I'm glad you agreed with me.

Upvoted and RESTEEMED :]

THANK YOU, BUDDY.

I haven't watched the latest star wars series (dodges rotten vegetables), but point 3 is a real bugbear of mine when it comes to digitally enhanced/retouched films. Why must they colour grade everything? My eyes actually get fatigued in some movies because there isn't enough colour variation.

Yes, the best movies with the best color palette are the ones directed by Ang Lee IMHO.

This makes me remember the first time I saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The bamboo scene was so beautiful it almost took me out of the movie haha!

You are wrong for a hundred reasons, but I'm just going to list three.

The over choreographed fight scenes in the prequels lack any emotion, compared to the original and new trillogy. Who exactly was Kylo Rens sparing partner? Much like Luke in the original trillogy he had no one to spar with so his saber skills was raw to say the least.

The reason why there was so much variation in ship design in the prequels is that Lucas is a business man first and foremost. He wanted to sell toys, this wasnt so much apparent in the original trillogy, but was clear in the prequels, he would shoehorn as many ships and characters into the franchise just for the purpose to sell toys.

If you are focusing on the design of ships and costume design then you are missing the bigger picture. The story of the prequels is none existent, overly complicated and makes no sense. Check out my article on the Phantom Menace highlighting a lot of the problems with the movie.

The force awakens isn't perfect and essentially a soft reboot of a new hope. I didnt care for rogue one. But the new films are considerably better than the prequels.

I deeply appreciate your opinion and have upvoted your posts and followed you.

I see your point, but the Starwars universe is still an amazing place!!

It still is through animation and video games! Better than the sequels.

Let's hope that the movies get better as time goes by.........

Incidentally, was this some of the first lightsaber choreography that revolved around a female character?

CGI animation was done before but on animated female characters. It was first on live female actors in sequels.

Ah, CGI choreography - that could certainly explain what "seemed off".
