Is Black Panther the Best Marvel Film? (pt.2)

in #blackpanther6 years ago (edited)

Check out pt.1 if you havn’t

I will compare Black Panther to the previous MCU films from Phase 2

I will ALSO compare Black Panther to the previous MCU films from Phase 1 but very briefly

Black Panther & Iron Man 3

While it was still cool seeing so many Iron Man suits and see Tony Stark going Batman to break into the fake Mandarin’s hideout it still have its own weakness.
Iron Man 3 definitely disappointed the comic book fans because of the way how The Mandarin and Killian are depicted as one character.
Obviously they are two different characters from the original comics.
I question why did the producer or director or writer decided to use The Mandarin while they could’ve just called the terrorist on the TV screen some other name.
That would’ve have been the very easy solution to avoid the backlash.
Also you already know Iron Man 3 has a very forgettable villain.
Adrian Killian probably has one of the worst backstories, it’s pretty much he was a typical nerd/geek who got rejected by Tony Stark and later wants revenge.
Also you don’t truly see Killian’s true attention as he is just a simple plain villain who just wants to fuck shit up unlike Killmonger.
If you compare the action from the two films they are awesome in their own ways so you can’t say which is better.
The climax in Iron Man 3 you see Tony Stark calling out his Iron Man suits with him jumping from one suit to another while the climax in Black Panther you see W’Kabi calling out the rhinos with the tribe warriors using their shield cloth with T’Challa using a spear to take down a plane.
In the climax of Iron Man 3 if all the Iron Man suits come together into one big Iron Man suit bigger than the Hulkbuster than maybe I will say Iron Man 3 is better than Black Panther but right now it is the other way around.

Black Panther & Thor: The Dark World

This is very easy to compare since Thor: The Dark World is mediocre to pretty good.
The Dark World tries to be like one of those Michael Bay’s Transformer movies where the movie tries to utilize human characters even though it’s supposed Autobots and Decepticons just like how it utilize Natalie Portman, her friends, and her professor to play important roles to the story even though it’s supposed to be about Norse gods/divine beings.
Also the ending of The Dark World with Loki disguising himself as Odin is not ominous as you think when you watch the first 13 minutes of Ragnarok then all the suspense dies.
Still I got to give props to the way how they don’t stray from Malekith to a different villain.
Unless you a big fan of Thor this is still however just simply copying and pasting the typical formula of making a superhero film.

Black Panther & Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Now this is where comparing the two movies gets really difficult.
Both are awesome in their own ways.
Now this is definitely the first that comes into my mind where I can’t compare any other Marvel film regardless of how awesome it is to Captain America: Winter Soldier because it is like comparing apples to oranges.
It’s not just Captain America fighting against Winter Soldier, it’s also the battle between Shield and Hydra.
You can really feel two opposing sides clashing against each other because you know both have opposite ideologies, both have history between each other, both clash like an 80’s action movie.
You can also feel the emotion because Steve and Bucky were the bestest of friends with Bucky being brainwashed creates an intense drama.
“Winter Soldier” is very underrated (mainly because the way it’s simply executed while having so little CGI but still having the visual appeal with great action) so both of them are awesome in their own ways.
Both films are not messy because they don’t have waaaaay too many characters to juggle unlike “Civil War” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
“Winter Soldier” is one of VERY few movies where I won’t compare it to Black Panther film and if I do compare the both, it would be EXTREMELY difficult but since Black Panther is newer I will say it is the best even just for the sake of this post.

Black Panther & Guardians of the Galaxy

GotG is definitely colorful and you have so many different factions fighting each other.
You have Ronin and his army, the Ravagers, Star-Lord and his crew, and Nova Corps. This movie shows who’s good, who’s bad, and who’s in between.
You have to admire how they manage to juggle so many of these characters
What REALLY made this film EPIC was the power stone where everyone was holding it together to kill Ronin which is what made this movie so epic.
If it wasn’t for that scene alone then most likely GotG wouldn’t be waaaay up or make itself completely distinguishable from the majority of MCU films.
AGAIN, this is very hard for me to compare this to the Black Panther film but for me I will make a decision on this one.
I can think of one reason to why GotG is epic WHILE I can think of multiple reasons to why Black Panther is epic.
Both films take us on a amazing journey just to let you all know, I LOVE GotG by the way.
If I had a gun to my head and was forced to choose which one, I choose Black Panther.

Black Panther & Avengers: Age of Ultron

I love the way how Ultron challenges the whole Avengers.
The highlights was the easter egg with the vibranium, Hulkbuster, seeing the whole Avengers again, Vision, the twins, big piece of land falling down to bring human extinction.
However the climax in age of ultron looks almost exactly like the climax in the first avengers film. The way how the Avengers fight the army of Ultrons looks similar to the Avengers fighting the Chitauri army from the first Avengers film.
Some would counter argue and say they brought the giant helicarrier, Iron Man/Thor/Vision teaming up blasting Ultron, and the twins fighting but for me the climax still needs more surprises.
I was hoping Ultron would have his own Hulkbuster, Ultron would bring Transformers, and go crazy with the imagination like nano-machines but the creativity in the climax feels restricted.
I am nitpicky about this but the producer/director should be aware of how similar it looks like to the climax of the first Avengers movie.
It is a step up from “The Avengers” in story and villain but Black Panther is still the better one.

Black Panther & Ant-Man

Ant-Man everything ties together when it comes to character objectives.
Ant-Man is probably the most underrated out of all the MCU movies.
Don’t get me wrong I still think this movie is great with the idea of exploring the world seeing a whole new perspective as a tiny person.
Ant-Man is a heist film and maybe it is very predictable because of that.
This is an easy comparison for me as I choose Black Panther.
Black Panther is better than Ant-Man for having a deeper plot, better action, better setting, more in-depth villain, and better visual

Black Panther & Phase 1 films

You already know Phase 1 is Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: First Avenger, Thor, and The Avengers. Black Panther is better than all of those movies.

Many people would think "The Avengers" is a classic but it recycles the same villain Loki. Also it's pretty much about them learning to get along together and work as a team which is pretty corny and cliche for a superhero film.

The same goes for the first Thor film. Thor is a douchebag then gets his powers stripped away to become a better person and he does so when he encounters Natalie Portman. AGAIN corny and cliche for a superhero film. Also this copies Spider-Man 2 with Tobey Maguire where the hero loses his superpower then gets his power back when he gets his shit together.

The Incredible Hulk has a very messy plot after watching it but the EASY reason would be the inconsistent cast where Edward Nortan was replaced by Mark Ruffalo for the character Bruce Banner. The people who hire cast should know better not to hire Edward Nortan as he is hard to get along with.

Captain America: First Avenger is definitely one of the top 2 of the phase 1 films but after watching Wonder Woman we see how bland it is.

Iron Man 2 I don't really need to explain. For the first Iron Man, my reason would be the climax doesn't feel too climatic compared to a lot of the MCU films.

In conclusion, the phase 1 films came out during 2008-2012 while Black Panther came out in 2018. That is plenty of time to see the difference in the visual. Also half or more than half of the Phase 1 films are pretty corny so if you like corny good for you. If you noticed, after "The Avengers" film came out thats when Marvel really stepped up their game in making good superhero films.

Sort:

The phase 2 movies in the MCU can be seen to target the growth of the heroes in both power and personality.

We see Tony Stark blowing up his suits, Cap dropping his shield and Thor loosing his hammer. The newbies in their introduction are faced with challenges that shake the core of their beliefs and personality and having to rise above all these. Also increase in strength.

Ant-Man, Black Panther and Dr. Strange all underestimate their foes when the clash for the very first time. They get defeated, then they come back with a team and defeat the villains.

The one thing the phase 2 movies do have are the lack of villains with a legitimate reason to oppose the protagonist. They have reasons to be villains: revenge, pure evil and the plot needs a villain.

That's what distinguishes Black Panther from the rest of the other phase 2 movies is the villain. It has a similar predictable plot but a villain whose only wrong is an error in thinking and the lengths he goes to see his vision through. The reason is valid, great goal but bad method.

That's why for me Black Panther is the best MCU movie at the moment. Thor Ragnarok almost got it but it became obvious Hela was pure evil because she could, like all the villains before her.

Top 3 Marvel films, in descending order:

  1. Kingsman 1
    kingsman-the-secret-service-2014.jpg
  2. Iron Man 1
  3. Black Panther
  4. The Avengers 1
  5. Logan

But I would put Thor Ragnarok above all of them, although it is a very unique & strange film that cannot be compared to others.
