Is Black Panther the Best Marvel Film? (pt.1)

in #blackpanther6 years ago (edited)

For me, the answer is YES. So far it is the best Marvel Cinematic Universe film

WHY? The best way to explain it is to do a compare/contrast with Black Panther and the previous MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movies

I will compare it to the previous MCU films from Phase 3

Black Panther & Captain America: Civil War

Really it’s all about FOCUS/ATTENTION and Black Panther beats “Civil War” at that.
Not saying that “Civil War” is scattered but you can clearly see a bunch of stories molded into one; the registration act affecting superheroes, Zemo, friendship between Bucky & Steve, Black Panther revenge quest, and Steve Rogers clashing against Tony Stark.
Even though the title is “Captain America: Civil War” it feels more like “Avengers: Civil War” as it is really about how the registration act split the Avengers.
If you ask yourself who is the main antagonist/villain in “Civil War,” you would say it’s Zemo as he is the one pulling the strings but the main antagonist is Tony Stark since he is the face of it all.
You can counter argue with me and say Black Panther is also like a few small stories crammed into one like other previous Marvel films but I disagree.
I mean yes, the first half feels like they are going against Klaue in a James Bond type of way with the gadgets and infiltration then you get the second half which is stopping Killmonger.
If you watch the movie carefully from another perspective you realize it’s really Killmonger the whole time.
He was pulling the strings behind Klaue (since they work together, since his father supplied Klaue with Vibranium) then in the second half he gets more screen time in the later half of the film.
They both have good stories, they both have REAL political issues but Black Panther beats Civil War in having a main villain and has better focus with the overall-story.
Black Panther plot is more tied together than Captain America: Civil War

Black Panther & Doctor Strange

Doctor Stranger does not have a memorable villain as it goes from Kaecilius to Dormammu.
For starters there is no backstory to Kaecilius at all as if he is just a plain villain but he is not.
If you watch Doctor Strange you already know he is supposed to be a sympathetic villain because of the death of his wife and son and how he seeks Dormammu to save everyone from death.
The film does not display any of his tragedies and it is rushed since it is less than 2 hours long.
Kaecilius is like Strange where he was a broken man seeking for help then when he found Kamar-Taj he became a gifted sorcerer.
Seeing the similarities between Kaecilius and Strange reminds me of Harry Potter and Voldemort because the two universes both deal with magic and their duel similarities.
Straying a little away from the topic what I’m trying to say is that Doctor Strange should take more aspects from the Harry Potter films like show more of the magical world as if we were there.
When watching Black Panther, I felt like I was exploring Wakanda as if I was there.
Doctor Strange could be on par with Black Panther if it showed more of the world of magic and give more backstory to Kaecilius but it didn’t and so it is mediocre compared to it.

Black Panther & Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Both films have humor
The difference is that Black Panther doesn’t force it too much and is well balanced unlike GotG Volume 2.
I feel like in GotG Volume 2, there has to be a humor every 5 minutes of the goddamn movie.
I get tired with the “Taserface” joke and they drag that out too long in this movie.
Also there was too many mediocre jokes to the point that it ruined the REAL tone of Volume 2. Volume 2 is supposed to be a bit more emotional than its prequel because the theme of this film is supposed to be about family.
Peter’s long lost father is Ego but he finds out his real daddy was Yondu.
Volume 2 fails to capture that real emotion the theme of family because of TOO MUCH HUMOR.
TOO MUCH HUMOR causes it to lose its full potential.
Black Panther the solo has plenty of humor while still managing to capture REAL emotion as we already see his backstory from “Civil War” and how he becomes his own man in his own movie.

GotG Vol.2 unique setting is Ego, the living planet while Black Panther unique setting is Wakanda.
I say Ego beats Wakanda when it comes to imagination, colors, and how it feels more like Avatar since the antagonist and setting are one and the same.
I feel as if Vol.2 will be on par with Black Panther if it just went the Avatar route where the characters explore more of the planet Ego like going to Disneyland so that it will bring out more of the escapism but no it spent too much time on the shitty jokes.
Wakanda however gives plenty of characters motivation, sense of direction, a real objective that helps gives depth to the story.
If Vol. 2 cut the bullshit with the jokes, support the theme of family, and add more fight scenes between Peter and Ego like DragonBall Z since they both are overpowered beings fighting each other then comparing it to Black Panther would be more like apples & oranges.

Black Panther & Spider-Man: Homecoming

They both have amazing fleshed out villains and they both want to send off weapons but Killmonger does it to change the world leading to a lot of violent wars while Vulture only cares about making a profit to support his family.
Which villain do you prefer? It’s pretty obvious.
You probably say I should not compare these two since they are different styles.
Homecoming is light tone while Black Panther is serious.
When it comes to a superhero film, I prefer serious and with situations that are more at stake so OBVIOUSLY Black Panther for me.
Also I get tired of the cliche of just some person on the street who becomes a superhero to save his/her own city (I’ve seen this concept so many times with tv shows like Arrow/The Flash/Daredevil) and Black Panther is much different and a much fresher take from that.

Black Panther & Thor: Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok learns from its other two prequels that it is better to just focus on its own strengths.
Ragnarok focuses on just being fun, colorful, and simple.
Ragnarok is simply three stories jumbled together; Ragnarok, Thor escaping Sakaar, Thor stopping Hela.
You see pretty much see how Ragnarok goes all over the place with the villains since you see 3 separate antagonist in this film while Black Panther focuses on mainly one. This proves quality over quantity.
Still, Thor Ragnarok is enjoyable because it knows what it is good at and what it is bad at.
Since it is the third installment it carries the baggage from the previous 2 prequels while Black Panther is carefully crafted.
