🗞Chainalysis Report on PlusToken ‘Scammers’ Blamed for Monday’s Crypto Selloff

The slide began at 18:28 UTC on Monday. In just seven minutes, bitcoin slipped 4 percent, to $6,800 from $7,085 according to data from Coinbase. In that time, ether took a bigger hit, dropping 7 percent from $140 to $130. Neither had seen such lows since Nov. 25, when the crypto markets suffered a temporary selloff.

With little news to go on, the markets found at least one culprit: Chainalysis’ new report, published nearly four and a half hours earlier in the day, saying 20,000 BTC (now worth $137 million) and 790,000 ETH (now worth $102 million) remain likely controlled by PlusToken “scammers.”

Further, Chainalysis claims $185 million in stolen bitcoin have already been liquidated by individuals related to PlusToken.

🗞Blockchain Startup Conflux to Get Shanghai Government Funding for Research Institute

Senior Shanghai government officials have agreed to help blockchain startup Conflux open a research institute and incubation center with millions of dollars, the firm's co-founder said.

The Beijing-based firm counts Sequoia China and Huobi among several prominent backers, raising $35 million via a private token sale in December 2018.

The research institute will be open later in December at the earliest, while the incubation center could be launched in June 2020.

The move comes amid the city’s crackdown on crypto businesses.

🗞 ‘No Chance:’ John McAfee Halts Crypto Promo as US 2020 Elections Near

Cryptocurrency entrepreneur John McAfee says he will stop promoting individual coins to focus on his presidential bid — but already knows he will not win.

In a series of tweets beginning on Dec. 14, McAfee, who has built a large following among crypto users, claimed that championing individual projects in the space took up too much of his time. “I’m no longer doing crypto promos,” one post summarized.

Elsewhere, McAfee was keen to note he was not retiring from cryptocurrency completely:

“People ask why I am no longer doing Blockchain promotions. It is very time consuming. My Presidential Campaign will be starting in earnest in January and I cannot do both. I am in no way abandoning crypto; only the task of promoting specific projects.”

🗞 Binance Supports Algorand’s v2.0.2 Upgrade, Halts ALGO Deposits

Algorand, a decentralized blockchain network developed by the eponymous American blockchain firm, is expected to upgrade to version 2.0.2 today.

The upcoming network upgrade is poised to increase the amount of time for nodes to upgrade to new consensus versions after voting thresholds have been met, as announced on Dec. 13.

Scheduled for 10:00 AM ET on Dec. 16, Algorand v2.0.2 release is expected to take place at block 3,705,466. At press time, there are 3,704,219 blocks on the Algorand blockchain, according to AlgoExplorer.io.

🗞 Bitcoin and Altcoins Gaining Bearish Momentum

Bitcoin price is down close to 4% and it settled below USD 7,000.

Ethereum is down more than 5% below USD 142 and XRP tumbled towards USD 0.1950.

EKT, DCR, XVG, ZEC and RLC are down more than 10% today.

Yesterday, we were having a nice bounce from that support line. However, the corection that we are having currently on the BTC is imapting heavly all the altcoins and STEEM is not an exception. We are currently testing the support line at 0.124$ and till now it is supporting us. Let's hope we won't break again that big support !
