🗞Venezuela’s Maduro Says He Will Airdrop Half a Petro Each to Public Employees, Retirees

Venezuelans including public sector workers, retirees and the military are set to receive a petro token handout this Christmas, so long as they register for the state's crypto payments platform.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced Friday that those groups would be airdropped 0.5 petro (said to be worth $30) as a holiday bonus this week, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal.

To be eligible, citizens will first have to sign up to PetroApp, the official government crypto wallet that launched back in May. The only platform that supports the oil-backed cryptocurrency, PetroApp is designed to allow users to purchase goods and services from their phones, as well as for standard transfers.

PetroApp can also be used to exchange other cryptocurrencies, too, meaning users may well use the app to swap their airdropped petro for the currently supported bitcoin, litecoin and dash.

🗞 Founder of Bitmain Rival MicroBT Arrested for Alleged Embezzlement

Yang Zuoxing, founder and CEO of Shenzhen-based bitcoin miner maker MicroBT, has been arrested for the alleged embezzlement of about $15,000.

The arrest, noted by the Shenzhen Nanshan District Prosecutor on Dec. 12 and reported by business publication Caixin on Sunday, comes amid ongoing battles between mining giant Bitmain and MicroBT, which has been a rising competitor this year challenging Bitmain's market dominance.

The Shenzhen district prosecutor said on its website last Thursday that it has recently authorized the arrest of a suspect named Yang *Xing (name partially redacted) on the allegation of embezzlement and the criminal case is still ongoing.

🗞 Bitmain’s Miner Manufacturing Subsidiary Had $680K in Assets Frozen in a Contract Dispute

A district court in Shenzhen, China, recently ordered the freezing of almost $680,000 in assets belonging to a fully owned subsidiary of bitcoin mining giant Bitmain.

In a ruling issued on Sept. 27 and published Friday, the Shenzhen Bao'An District Court sided with a firm called Dongguan Yongjiang Electronics, granting an application for asset protection in a contract dispute with the defendant, Shenzhen Century Cloud Core.

Yongjiang, which supplies electronic device components, asked the court on Sept. 25 to freeze 4.7 million yuan (around $676,000), in assets owned by the mining subsidiary to ensure it would be able to claim such an amount should the court rule in its favor in an ongoing trade contract dispute.

🗞 Binance Supports Algorand’s v2.0.2 Upgrade, Halts ALGO Deposits

Algorand, a decentralized blockchain network developed by the eponymous American blockchain firm, is expected to upgrade to version 2.0.2 today.

The upcoming network upgrade is poised to increase the amount of time for nodes to upgrade to new consensus versions after voting thresholds have been met, as announced on Dec. 13.

Scheduled for 10:00 AM ET on Dec. 16, Algorand v2.0.2 release is expected to take place at block 3,705,466. At press time, there are 3,704,219 blocks on the Algorand blockchain, according to AlgoExplorer.io.

🗞 Blockchain Might Be a Silver Bullet for Fighting Deepfakes

In an era of scams and fake news, so-called “deepfakes” are the latest assault on our relationship with reality.

If you’re unfamiliar, deepfakes are videos generated with help from artificial intelligence that show a recognizable figure (like Barack Obama or Mark Zuckerberg, for example) saying things that they’ve never actually said. By putting false words in the mouths of prominent, powerful people, deepfakes are a perceived threat purportedly true information.

But if there’s one thing we know about blockchain, the database technology that props up popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, we know that it excels at verifying and confirming what is real. Did Alice actually send Bob $100 of crypto? That’s an easy confirmation to make with access to an open blockchain.

So as I was expecting, a test of of 0.124$ support line has been done today and the good news is that we had a solid bounce from it. The market is now considering this line as a major support and this is why we have so many buyers on that level, because they consider this line as a current low. That bounce would be awesome if we were able to break also the resistance line around 0.138$ but this is another story
