Steemit: Curation League Week 8 - New users, and a new Leader!

in #bisteemit7 years ago

How well are you curating financially?

Are you making the best use of your Steem Power and votes?

This post looks at how well the users on this list are curating, purely from a financial perspective.

Welcome to week 8 - This is the eighth post in a series which looks at a method to work out just how well your curation skills rank against other Steemians.

The users listed in this report have been selected at random and vary in account size (Steem Power).

Curation and its rewards system is a complex beast. Here are some decent attempts at explaining how it works:

My takeouts from the above, and general opinion is:

  • Voting in the first minute will earn you a curation reward of almost 0.000

  • Voting between 1 and 29 minutes will earn an increasing % of the curation rewards split, this value peaking at 30 minutes and remaining the same from this point onwards

  • The goal is to get in prior to the big hitters, but not too early in that your % in the 2nd point isn't too low (e.g. 15 minutes - approx 50%)

  • It is commonly suggested that 20-25 minutes is the 'best' time to vote (especially on known power-authors posts because they are likely to have more auto-votes coming in at these times - and you want to be ahead of these votes)

  • A vote of equal weight and equal Steem Power at 30 minutes will give more reward than a vote at, for example 1 hour - first come first served, but don't arrive to early :)

As you can see, a combination of many variables such as Steem Power, voting strength, voting weight, and time of vote, (and more) all play a part in the amount of reward received.

Is there a skill to it though? And how well are you doing?

I have used the following method to obtain what I need for this report.

  • Accessed the steemit.com Wallet to collect Steem Power and + or - the leased/delegated steem

  • Used the 'Rewards' drop-down menu to find 'Curation rewards' for the previous week

Therefore, my data is gathered manually and the curation period is only for the previous week.

This is obviously not ideal and reduces the potential to widen the results set because of the time it takes to gather the data.

This weeks results

The key columns are:

  • Curation: Total curation rewards for the previous week

  • SP Total: Total vested Steem Power (including delegated SP)

  • Curation/SP %: The % of curation rewarded Steem Power in relation to amount of Steem Power owned

This final column is what I feel is a genuine indicator of how well you are working the curation game with the tools (including vested Steem Power) that you have at your disposal.

Imagine you have 10,000 Steem Power, and I have 1,000 Steem Power.

After a week curating, the rewards for both of us are 1 SP each.

In my mind, I'm working my Steem Power 10 X harder - If you, in this example earned curation rewards of 10 SP (and I earned 1 SP), then I would say we were curating with equal skill - rewards wise.

This weeks' findings:

  • Last weeks' 2nd place @carlgnash has worked his way to the top this week. Check out the links above for more details on what Carl is doing. Congratulations Carl!

  • @dontstopmenow is still curating with excellence is in 2nd this week - ultra consistent stuff!

  • Very close behind in 3rd, another very consistent performer @biophil

  • @buggedout takes 4th and has been present in the top 5 for over a month now

  • The average % curation reward/Steem Power this week is 0.15246 down from last week which was 0.17615, and almost identical to 2 weeks ago where the average was 0.15266.

  • My score is still way below average and I feel I spread my vote too widely - I just like to reach as many people as possible. Doing this though without a lot of SP (100,000+) means your curation rewards will suffer, in my opinion.

A few points:

  • If you have spotted any glaring errors in my post, please let me know so I can fix them.

  • If you would like to be added or removed from my personal curation league (next weeks post) let me know. I'd like to add people who are using 'front-running' service, or trailing a popular Steemian if possible.

  • If a user has powered down or powered up Steem in the past week, the results will be skewed ( @mikepm74 I'll add you again next week!)

  • Some Users, 'Power Users', and Whales (listed in this post and otherwise) are not aiming for max. curation rewards, and are supporting communities with their votes. e.g. @acidyo

  • If you have any other comments, please enter them into the box below

And ...

  • I feel that curation should be about finding awesome content and giving it an up-vote - irrelevant of the curation rewards you might receive

  • Help the Steem Blockchain grow, support quality content from newer authors - The sooner you find them, the higher your curation rewards will be.

I would really be tempted to try going for max curation rewards for manual upvoting some day, until then @ocd and the community needs me. :)

yeah that would be cool to see!

As an owner of a pretty large sum of SP, for the community it is best for you to carry on spreading that power out as much as possible.

And honestly, if the rest of the whales did that, i reckon the platform would be starting to sing :)

Let's see if we get some influence on the upcoming ocd-bot, would be great to be able to continue and support our ~1000 unique authors we have nominated so far while the delegatees receive all the curation rewards back.

How many new authors will you be adding to the bot each day/week?

If you can keep up with the decent newcomers, that bot could well be the Savior!

And, thanks for the support :)

Good job! Thanks to @abh12345 you have planted 0.10 tree to save Abongphen Highland Forest in Cameroon. Help me to plant 1,000,000 trees and share my Steem Power to the others. Selfvoting is prohibited, but that should be the reason to spread the world to protect our precious environment. Check out profile of our conservation association @kedjom-keku and the founder/coordinator @martin.mikes to get more information about our conservation program. My current SP is 14292.11. Help me to plant more trees with your delegated SP.

Thanks a lot,

wow i would be number 4 with 0.36620331380879834% lol

NICE!! :D Glad you are taking the time to calculate yourself, i think it's worth seeing where you stand, good job!

I learned the curation game quite early but I never really paid any attention to it. I try to support the content that I like with my tiny upvote.
Thanks for sharing this
Very useful

Hey man, I think the 'community' way to curate is spread your vote so fair play for that.

10 votes a day is for someone who is either time limited, or going all out for curation rewards. For me, there are more than 10 good blogs a day..

Cheers!

I've thought about this a bit - I am now doing a little bit less of the "curating for money" and a little bit more of the "curating for love". I started using the slider a bit, but really - I think I am better off staying at 100% with only 11 cents per vote. I feel like I should make it count as much as I can.

And yes - this does limit the time I can spend curating and this is a good thing since I am so slow on getting content out.

Thanks so much for doing this each week. I refer people over here all the time, but I see they do not sign up. This is a problem in my weight loss coaching too. The desire is there, but not enough to take action.

Hey

Yes I think sadly, 100% is best with that amount. 50 minimum.

Can you check in a weeks' time when this comment pays out and remind me? I'm wondering something :)

So I just got .160 sbd and .176 sp for this payout - reminding you of it like you asked me :)

Thank you :)

and I got 0.117 SP

I'm quite keen on comment curation :)

I agree and do it too. The first few votes each morning are for comments and I try not to fall behind.

I like getting paid for comments to grow my sbd so I can change that to STEEM and lease delegated sp. Whew!

That is a good plan.

Views are definitely down in generally so commenting on the active users blog is essential - I need to do more of that, always!

Yes, I will remind you! Thanks for the vote :)

I dont enough power yet to make a difference, but when I vote I choose to do for content that I like, consider to be useful, make my heart sing and so on :)

And good for you :D

Happy post Steemfest weekend!

Hey Asher!
You are a little bit "down" in your list, haha.
I improved a little bit... I'm at 0.173 this week.
Big hug hombre!
Steemitri The Mannequin

P.S. what about a new interview? I liked the one with @dontstopmenow

Man, I am nearly last! I think I just didn't vote enough last week!

haha :) or too much?

No issue for you at present though man, you got the mathematical know-how - just need 10k SP until you start taking curation a bit more serious financially!

That's very helpful post..........///////////

Thank you :)

welcome,.,.,.

A bumping feature has been added to the process . In the past if I voted 3rd or 4rth I would stay there regardless . Now if I go back and look 5 minutes later I may find myself in 11th or 18 place . I admit that when I see this I UN-upvote . Sure my rewards are adjusted but the time clock doesn't reset . I'm not at all pleased with this feature but it is what it is sadly .

If you un-upvote you don't get the vote power back. So you just lose that vote. It surprised me when someone told me that so I tested it to confirm it.

Also, how are you working out which position you are in? The drop down list doesn't reflect timing as far as I know. There's no way for someone to bump you in the timing of votes. It could be they're voting while you're reading the article and you haven't refreshed the page when you vote?

yeah the cancelling costing your vote power is brutal imo!

thanx for such an informative post................

42 minutes ago my name was second on the drop down box just above comments . Now my name is not visible within the first 20 of that same box . I find it hard to believe I'm the only person who has noticed this . Some explanation from an authority would go a long ways .
