W okresie przelotów jest najpospolitszym bodźcem spotykanym nad wodami i na różnego rodzaju podmokłych terenach.

Zamieszkuje północną Eurazję od Europy po Półwysep Czukocki i Wyspy Komandorskie. Zimuje w pasie klimatów tropikalnych i subtropikalnych Afryki, w Azji Południowej w południowych Chinach, na Filipinach, Indonezji i w Australii.
