Vintage of the Day - Antique and Vintage Defined

in #beyondbitcoin6 years ago (edited)

You've heard of the Antiques Roadshow.

A magical place where objects found in an attic or bought for $5 are worth $50,000!!

Ok. That's not how it really works, but we'll cover that in another post. :)

So what is antique and what is vintage?

Here are the traits they share.

*Someone has to want it
*They must hold value
*Each has an age

  1. Someone has to want it- Let's say you find a toilet plunger from the 1960's. WOW that's vintage, I'm going to sell it on Ebay! NO. No you aren't. No one wants it, it's just old and gross. You wouldn't call it a vintage toilet plunger.
  2. Must hold value- If no one wants it, or is willing to pay for it? Neither vintage or antique is the right word.
  3. Age- IF it's is at least 25 years and also fits 1 and 2, tada, VINTAGE. If Antique is at least 100 years old and fits #1 and #2, ANTIQUE!!

So if an object fits the criteria above1993 or prior is VINTAGE. For an antique object? 1918 or prior.

Just a few examples of antique items vs. vintage and you can see it runs through every category. There are antique silver pieces, antique board games. Vintage pastel paintings and record players. It's all about your taste.

Hopefully, it clears up the questions, how old is an antique? How old is vintage?

One last note- being either antique OR vintage doesn't make it valuable. Just because something is 100 years or older doesn't alone give it more value than vintage OR any value at all. Someone has to be willing to buy it. That simple.

Thanks for trying to educate people! I've been selling on eBay for almost 20 years now and it constantly amazes me that so many sellers have NO idea what constitutes "vintage" or "antique". It ain't rocket science... :-)

Yeah it's not that hard. I hope it made sense. I should add being either antique or vintage doesn't raise or lower the price, it's all about demand.

Exactly. Lots of beautiful antique items aren't worth diddly, because so few remember anything about them. And so few have any real taste, these days... :-)

So so true. One day I'll share my screw you Ikea post!

Cool post, thanks. Here in South Africa most of our antiques are made of 'oregon pine'. Basically doughlas fur wood from the state of Oregon. Not sure how all the wood got here, but it's taken on almost a 'mystical' element. This plain fur wood, is highly sought after in SA, all because of history and people's perception of it being 'very old'. Cheers
