Bizarre beer of the week #2
Some beers are just... well.... weird. In this series I will feature the most bizarre beers out there. Some might have unusual ingredients, others might have a strange colour and more others might actually be just as interesting to taste as they are bizarre.
In today's episode: elephant poop beer. Say whaaaaaat????
Un Kono Kuro
I shit you not, this beer really comes from elephant poop (Yes, this is a silly word joke). Off course the brewers from Sankt Gallen Brewery in Japan are not adding the smelly substance of the giant beasts to the beer directly.
The beer is made with special coffee beans that are fed to an elephant and used after it pooped the beans back out. The coffee beans are actually a luxury good in Thailand. There is a farm with about 20 elephants that produces the Black Ivory Beans. It seems that some reaction in the elephant's digestion process adds to the flavour of the coffee.
The coffee beans aren't cheap either. You can easily pay 500 dollars for one pound of Black Ivory Beans. That is because about 33 kg of beans are needed to produce 1 kg of good elephant Black Ivory Beans. The other beans are completely digested by the animal, obviously. And it also costs quite a bit of money to keep 20 of those giants alive and healthy.
Sankt Gallen Brewery uses the beans to enhance the flavour of their coffee stout. Also the name of the beer refers to the Japanese word for poop "Unko".

Wow. Haven't heard this one before. Beer itself must be expensive, too!
As far as I know, they produced it only once and it sold out straight away. So I guess it is hard (and expensive) to get your hands on a bottle.
Doesn't really sound very appealing. Mikkeller do something similar on a much bigger scale, so if you feel like a poop beer that might be easier to find.
Mikkeller's is called Beer Geek Brunch Weasel and it is made with coffee beans that are eaten by and crapped out of a civetcats. Never had it myself of course but here is a pic...
Holy crap! :-D I do like some ideas of Mikkeler, never heard of this one though. Might try it sometime...maybe...if I can get rid of the rather shitty idea.
