5 beers that will fool you at the bar

in #beer7 years ago

Most brewers do not only love to make their own beer. They also love to have a good drink at the bar. They might get inspired in terms of flavour. But sometimes they might pick up a name for their own beer during those long bar nights as well.

Here you have 5 beer names which will surely fool you around when you’re out with friends in Belgium. Don’t be fooled!

I will add the English translation for every beer name.

1) ‘t Zelfde - (The same again)

You might want to place your orders carefully when this beer is around. Or you could keep on getting it over and over again all night long... Until the entire stock runs out. Because this beer is no longer in production.

Not that this “mistake” would be bad. Here are some details of the beer:

Brewery: Bosteels
Beer style: Blonde ale
Alcohol: 6.1 %

They also have another beer: ‘t Zelfde maar anders (The same again, but different).

2) Nog ééntje - (Another one)

Just as risky as the previous one. You could end up drinking this for the entire night if you keep saying you simply want another one.

Up to you if you decide to do so. It wouldn’t be a punishment in my opinion. Good beer with a bio recipe and low sugar health.

Brewery: Stepaja, but brewed at De Proefbrouwerij
Beer style: Blonde Triple
Alcohol: 6,5%

3) Slaapmutske - (Night cap)

In Flanders, we call the last drink of the night a “slaapmutske”, which is literally the same as the night cap in English. Don’t be surprised if the bartender asks if you are leaving after that one.

On a serious note. It is actually a really good choice to round up a beer night. They have several variants, but the blonde one is most common in bars, especially in the Ghent area.

Brewery: Brouwerij Slaapmutske, but brewed at De Proefbrouwerij
Beer style: Blonde Triple
Alcohol: 8,1%

4) Kutbier - (Shitty beer)

In The Netherlands they also know how to name their beers at times. Just make sure you don’t end up with yet another crappy pint of Heineken when you ask for this.

Luckily it is not as shitty as they claim to be. It is actually made with prunes to give it an interesting flavour.

Brewery: Het Boegbeeld
Beer style: Blonde with prunes
Alcohol: 6,2%

5) Goedendag - (Hello)

The beer you just keep on greeting your bartender with. Needless to say you can have a hard time getting this one ordered.

But in the end, I would say it is a “Nice to meet you" once you have a taste.

Brewery: De Toye
Beer style: Gold Blonde ale
Alcohol: 8%

I wonder if any of these available in the US as now I need to sample each one. Thank you for the post.

You're welcome. :-)

Well, the first one is getting harder and harder to find since they no longer make it. The beers that are made at 'De Proefbrouwerij' are often exported to the US and Asia. So you should be able to find those for sure. The same goes for the Goedendag.

Not sure about the one with prunes from The Netherlands. Only found it once near their location.
