Beautiful Beer Labels #2: Byggvir
Hi Steemians,
In this series I am looking for the most beautiful, arty, smart or interesting beer labels. We all know beers taste great, but quite often we don't pay enough attention to the label design. That's a shame, because a good label can really make the beer experience more complete.
For this one, I found a nice label from the young Totem brewery in my area.
About the label
Totem is one of the new craft brewers that showed up in the Ghent area in recent years, along with other names like Hedonis or L'Arogante. And they are growing fast.
For the artwork and beer names, they get their inspiration in the mythologie of different ancient cultures. Many beers carry Aztec names like Zipaca, Votan or Chac and more.
For Byggvir they found the inspiration in the Norse mythology. Byggvir is in fact a baker / miller. And Bygg is the ancient Norse word for barley. So you often see him represented with grain, bread or beer. This is an image of a young Byggvir:
Of course you don't want to put a young boy on a 9% heavy beer. Might as well make a tough viking out of him. So that's what Totem did. I really like the drawing style and the combination of blue with green-yellow.
About the beer
As I said. It is 9%, so it is not something you will be drinking all night. The colour is as dark as the Norse Winter. And a fair note: this one is meant to age. So you might want to keep it for several months or even a year before you drink it.
In the nose you will find a maple syrup tone. It is a Maple Ale after all. The taste is sweet maple, along with malt, bitterness and banana tones because of the yeast.
Totem is never afraid to experiment with new flavour combinations and see what it brings. An interesting brewery if you like complex beers.
