Beautiful Sunday and Sublime Sunday - Visiting the Old Customs House in Bangkok !!

in #beautifulsunday5 years ago

Today i had decided i wanted to see some abandon buildings they always interest me in the fact of wanting to know what when on in these buildings before they were abandon. I took the Skytrain to Sathorn Pier and then a Taxi Boat along the Chao Phraya river and three stops up is where i wanted to get of called the Si Phraya Pier i knew there was a old abandon building just walking distance of the pier by the river.

Now i never knew what this old abandon building was i had just seen it from riding along the river in the taxi boat but it looked interesting enough and it was just what i was looking for so i hopped of at Si Phraya Pier and go and investigate.

As i got of the boat and looked at this old abandon building from the pier already i was in ore of excitement i just wanted to dive straight through the doors but of course they had security guards around the place and that wasn't going to be possible and even had signs around saying no photos ..what the heck but i never take noticed of them till i am told so...hehe..so here i am shooting away and none of the security guards were bothered to get of there chairs and chase me around in the heat...lol :)

I did find a couple of ways of getting inside these building but i didn't want to be dragged to a police lock up if they caught me so i just went about enjoying the characteristics of this once awesome building and as always these Banyan Trees seem to shoot out from every crack and take a hold on anything abandon in Thailand which does add more horror movie spookiness to the whole scenery.

So what i had actually stumble in on was "The Old Customs House" in Bangkok this 3 storey majestic and magnificent building is the definition of the elegant Palladian style customs house adjacent to the Chao Phraya river and built in 1888 by a Austrian - Italian architect Joachim Grassi.

The old customs house represented the prosperity of the Kingdom of Siam now known as the Kingdom of Thailand it bought by trade relations with Western countries during the reign of King Rama V but it also reflected the importance of the river as the trade route , which significantly contributed to the transition from monopolyto free trade.

As the headquarters of The Customs Department the customs house levied import and export duties in order to solve smuggling problems and a rate of 3% of the import and export value of goods was changed at that time.

Apart from being the customs house the building was capable of accommodating a diverse array of activities such as foreign delegate accommodation , ball and even coronation ceremony of King Rama V.

I have heard that this historical building will be coming back to life in the near future it will be turned in to a luxury hotel in a heritage style.

What a pity that such beautiful buildings get abandoned. It's like we are destroying our history without even blinking..

This architecture makes me think of Spain. Would it be possible that these buildings were built by Spanish? Just asking :)

I like those green branches growing out of the houses :) You took some very nice photos! Thank you for sharing and have a lovely start of the week!

It is a shame but the good news i hear they are going to restore the building and turn it into a luxury hotel keeping the same design and the architectural work was done by a Italian architect very similar to Spanish architect not much difference so your not far of at all. Those green branches do give the place some character in the way it is :)

And thank you and you have great week also :)

Damn, that bridge sure looks more unsafe than the railway from last week.

Haha...your damn right i would be rather walking along the railway bridge then that other one...lol :)

What a cool find in such contrast withtallthe modern buildings you have shared with us
I guess they don't take the security of this place very serious by the action or lack of action of the security guards
Isn't nature pretty amazing the way nature is reclaiming the building

Awesome! Shame you cant get inside without being arrested. In the UK, you can get away with this kind of thing and little will happen.

Thank you @slobberchops maybe if i tip the security guard next i go there again i might have a change of getting in :)

Ah if there's security then that's a little different. They simply escort us off the property here.

Yeah don't want to mess with security when you are in a different country :)

Thank you again for the thorough coverage. Trees growing out of the windows was strange to see.

Your most welcome @willowwisp my pleasure and thank you for dropping by once again , those trees growing out of the brick work and windows certainly make the place look spooky :)

Growing out of bricks or windows is an unusual site for me.

It would be from were you are but here it's like a everyday seen thing these Banyan trees get around...lol :)

Thank you so much @helpiecake that is much appreciated :)

What a fascinating derelict building, it’s quite funny they have security guards for it. So many places have rules about no photography but I have rarely heard of it being enforced.

I agree with you, old abandoned buildings are amazing to visit and think how they were in their prime - it would be incredible to see this building as a hotel in the future.

I suppose they have a lot of heritage items in them building and they don't want people destroying that as with no taking photos i always ignore that unless told so...lol :)

They have got plans on the way what a nice hotel it will be by the river.
