So stop saying it, people.
Oh dear. This seems to have upset you, McPeel Dearie. It's really not a bad phrase at all, and isn't a derogatory remark regarding bananas.
The phrase, "panties in a bunch," came about way back in the 1900s, I can't remember when exactly, but it doesn't really matter, does it? It was a long time ago. When women would buy their unmentionables at the 5-and-dime store, they didn't come all hangin' up pretty on little plastic hangers in lingerie stores. The panties came packaged together, maybe 5 or 6 of them, all in a bunch.
So, see? It was actually good if a lady got her panties all in a bunch, because she got a good deal on a whole package of them.
You know what? I feel better if I go along with your story, so that's what I'm going to do. Thank you, GramNana. As always, you bring wisdom and insight to this blog.

Hahaha!!! I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch over the origin of this idiom, GramNana! As a matter of fact, it has made me see it in a different way. Next time I'll buy Women's Bonds, 4 in a packet, and not in a plastic hanger, I will smile and think about the wisdom of the only one GramNana.
