๐Ÿ’“Kai (6yo) Just Said Mummy For The First Time ๐Ÿ’“

in #autism โ€ข 7 years ago

Our beautiful six year old son Kai can now say Mummy! @ausbitbank and I are just so proud of this massive achievement, for those who don't know Kai has Autism and is non verbal.

He was diagnosed with Autism just before his second birthday, so we started therapy right away - he attended a specialised Autism kindergarten and now attends a special school along with his big sister.

Kai has never had proper speech unlike his sister who had speech before suffering a regression, which left her with echolalia (repeating words and phrases out of context in a repetitive manner) instead of full speech.

Now this does not mean that Kai is mute, he has always verbalised (made noises and sounds) but he has never started forming proper words - that is until the last couple of years.

During this time Kai has started to say some singular words, the first were numbers and he can now count to 20.

He then grew interested in music and since then his vocabulary has begun to expand, but for the most part his language whilst developing lacks meaning and intent.

So after four years of therapy, hard work, tears, struggles and dedication plus our life savings, our amazing little boy can now say mummy.

An achievement most parents expect as a given and even take for granted - but it's one that we honestly thought may never come.

I am proud beyond words, he has made so much progress and worked so hard - I can't explain just how amazing this is and just how much it means to see all his hard work paying off.

We managed to catch him talking on video, it's a bit shaky and not the best quality but I just couldn't resist sharing his massive achievement with the world - this means everything to two very happy and proud parents.

So here it is, six years in the making - Kai says mummy to me for the first time!

That is wonderful news! Autistic kids are so special and sweet! It is amazing how much music can help them so keep that up for them! I am starting to follow you as my brother has learning disabilities, and my sister's son has been diagnosed with a mild case of autism. He's not talking much either at six years.

Keep up the good work @krystle! I know it can get hard sometimes, but very worth to see that smile on their faces :)

It really was an amazing moment and he was just so excited and happy, he is an amazing little boy so smart and loving.

Music really has been a massive turning point for him, first it was some words in old macdonalds farm then twinkle twinkle now he has started saying dinosaur names like triceratops - which is simply unbelievable.

Thanks for the follow I try to write about special needs issues when I can, the autism community is a very close and supportive one we all tend to look out for one another - followed back :)

The hard times are a killer but now we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we will face more problems as we go and his ability levels change - but right now knowing that there's now hope of him one day speaking, there's a whole new world of possibilities out there.

Thanks heaps for the comment :)

Nice comment! Time to unload some upvotes!

Thank you @papa-pepper. Nice meme!

Congratulations on this happy moment!

Thanks so much @ausbitbank and I beyond proud and couldn't be more happy with how well he is doing :)

I can't image how good that must feel. Beautiful moment!

Even just rewatching it brings a tear to the eye, I am just so happy he chose to say it as I wasn't trying to get him to.

Then on top of it for him to keep on saying it, to be able to film it and keep that moment forever - it is something we will cherish forever, especially considering how excited he was :)

Good share, changes my mood on the day. Thank you for some perspective :)

Thanks for the comment, I find it's useful to share these moments so people can learn about autism and all that that entails.

People can't know what they haven't been exposed to, so I am always happy to share these amazing moments that some might simply take for granted.

It must be difficult at times but done for the greater good. Stay strong, your efforts are not wasted.

That it is, but the effort is never wasted - he has achieved so much with the odds stacked against him and he still has the most sweet personality in spite of it all.

Thanks for your kind words :)

That's awesome- so happy for your family. I haven't done any in depth research on this however I did recently either saw a video or read an article where some parents are using cannibas with their autistic children and seeing significant improvements. May be worth looking into- hope for continued success!

Yeah there has been a lot of research into it and I am happy and relieved to say the Australia has just started medical trial of cannabis, but it's still not legal here - but it looks like things might be starting to move in the right direction finally.

Thanks so much for your kind words :)

This makes me value @ausbitbank's work even more now. I could have known he is a dad and for you both, i am sure eyes welled up in tears of joy. i do hope kai heals completely. it is very possible!

Yeah we were all a bit teary but just so happy, thanks for you kind words :)

God bless you all

Thanks, you too :)

oh its so nice :)

Thanks :)

Wonderful, wonderful! Imagine how long he's wanted to say "Mummy!"

May his words always have a place to flow!

Wonderful it is :) he is so cute when he is unsure of a word, he won't say it or he will whisper it until he gains more confidence - so the way he's yelling it in the clip is a huge improvement.

He's saying so many new words lately it's such an amazing time, thanks for your kind words :)

I can imagine it! You must be so proud, and I'm sure he's thrilled too! His words will be a blessing for the whole world :)

I just love the moment at the very end where you can see a massive smile on his face, he is just beaming with pride - that's what makes it all worth it, he knows he did something amazing :)

It sure is something all right. And thanks very much for sharing it with us. He had me smiling almost as much as he was :)

awe and Kai is one of my favote names :)

I love it too his full name is actually Malakai, but as we always call him Kai so it just felt more natural to write it that way :)
