The Singa Lion Serpant! Singha Tua - The Batak People Of Sumatera 🇮🇩 [onARTBali/Indonesia Project]

in #artefacts6 years ago (edited)

It's been a while that I didn't continue writing, introducing more about a project, still close to my heart, filled with passion for a culture and history I highly admire.

You can find incredible art & artists in Indonesia but not many quality documentations are found, as I discovered in my research.

This sculptures depicts a great village chief, possibly also a village priest, riding a singa lion-serpent, a mighty underworld creature, on his journey to the afterlife.

Yesterday's article flamed my motivation again. [Live A Life You Are Proud Of! [onArtBali Reflections]

I started @onartbali a few years back, when I lived in Indonesia from 1999-2016. I am planning to go back but don't know yet when this will be possible.

The first time, I saw Pak Wayan's collection of over 6000 breathtaking artefacts was nearly 16 years ago when my Balinese partner Made Bagus took me to his families's galleries.

I couldn't believe what I found. I started collecting some for my house in Bali.

My "Mammasitta" Terracotta statue is my pride!

Many years later the idea was born to create a table book. I didn't get that far yet because I ran out of funds. Many times I went back to the galleries just to look but finally I chose aprox. 50 pieces, hired two very skilled photographers and a team to create our first little booklet you can download HERE.

Artisans of beautiful Indonesia! " Indonesia indah!

Now I am back on @steemit to share those artefacts one by one and collect #steem to be able to finish this idea to present and publish a hopefully interesting book. I was planning to donate a percentage of the income to young Indonesian artists and to Pak Wayan's family.

For now its just a dream but Hey!....Its all about the right time. I will make this happen one day that all of you can have a beautiful book on your coffee tables.

The first piece comes from BATAK, LAKE TOBA , Inland Barus, Northern Sumatra, Indonesia

I will copy/paste this text from my a little amateur-ish website which I created myself due to lack of money to pay for a high quality version.

The Batak region is in Northern Sumatra, Lake Toba area, consist of six ethnic groups, with their own languages; Karo, Pakpak, Toba, Angkola, Mandailing, and Simalungung.
Batak meaning “pig eater" and originally was given by the Muslims, the Batak people adopted theis name as an honorary title. The whole Batak community considers “Samosir” the Island in Lake Toba, to be their Ancestral home land. They believe a balance exists between the living world, and the spiritual world of the dead, this is essential to their way of life, and if disrupted, death and destruction results.

Harmony between man and the Ancestor is necessary for the well being, and the Ancestor must have living descendants to continue to feed them, worship them, and eventually elevate them to the status of natures spirit; known as Sombaon. In turn, the living must have ancestor to guide them and protect them. The Ancestors depend on sacrificial offerings and if they are not provided for, by man, they can become ridiculed by other Ancestors, and as the Ancestors depend on man, they are very wary of innovation that would threaten their customs, rituals and sacrifices.

The Batak people accept life based on reciprocity and they know that the Ancestors have the ability to devastate man who does not follow customary traditional laws. They create superb stone effigies [mejan] to venerate the noble dead, and assist the transformation of their souls into benevolent ancestor spirits. Male and female sculptures are placed side by side beneath the village banyan tree, where offerings are made to spirits of nature. The Pakpak Batak developed a tradition of cremation hundreds of years ago and the ancestors’ remains are placed in urns alongside their effigies.

what is these ?

Music promoter. World Traveler. Blogger. Photographer. Author.

Who are you, @mammasitta??? Wow!

The carvings on page 4-5 remind me of the teak carvings my Dad brought back from Thailand for me as a kid. They were so intricate and detailed, and the teak felt so light in my hands; almost as if they were hollow. I can still sense them in my hands decades later...

You are a fascinating woman!

I am a “monster” filled with so many passions hahahaaaa!!!!

I am so happy that you appreciate my articles so much! Means the world for me!

Matur Suksama ! Thank you!

Interesting. I clicked on this post the day we buried my mum. It was a pleasant funeral, as pleasant as these things can be.
Death after a life is of course natural.

I like the idea of the tribes people outlined here. They are following their beliefs.
Many in the west have lost the concept of belief.

So sorry to hear about your Mom’s departure to the other side of the rainbow bridge where we all might meet again. I have learnt a lot in Indonesia and death became a different “feeling”. I am back in the West and face those old so-called western fears, looking at my old Mama. It’s different here the way how we say “ Good bye”. I could write so much more now but I rather let it be.
🌺🙏

I know, and thank you. We are very lucky that we have seen other ways of dealing with this transition.

I just happened to find ( maybe by coincidence) this article and thought you might be interested to read this as well.
Oh well, I actually don’t really believe in coincidence

Thank you @mammasitta it is an interesting read. I don't believe in coincidence either. :)
I may try writing about my own experience.

Good idea! I wrote a little emotional blue moon rant today :)

The "Mammasitta" Terracotta statue is really delighting and I hear from friends there that people there are so kind and I'm sure you are kind too and have inner beauty to mention them

I would love to check out your book. I'll give my tiny up votes for now in hopes you get to achieve your goal soon! I think you will :) Hopefully someday my votes will be worth more and I can further help you finish your project!

Cheers!

I just saw your kind reply now but recently I was a bit overwhelmed, replying as much as I can :)

I really appreciate your support and reading about this project.

Will see where the wind takes me next :)

🙈🙈🙈

I lived in Indonesia for six months, it was really magical and I didn't want to leave but it's the life
sometimes you do things that you don't want but can do nothing when the life says its word
thanks for reminding me that beautiful days @mammasitta

dimana???? where are you now?

Batak is one of the most well-known ethnic tribes of Indonesia. Greetings from Aceh. @mammasitta

I studied this tribe a lot and yes !!! Beside the Dayak's I am fascinated by Indonesian tribes and their artists!!!!

if @mammasitta learns all the tribes and local languages that exist in Indonesia, @mammasitta will spend all life in Indonesia. Indonesia has a wide variety of ethnicity and culture.

my bahasa is so bad and its enough if I learn one language beside bahasa Bali. I respect Indonesian culture, especially now being so far away from all I love.

If I am Balinese, surely I will teach @mammasitta Balinese better. But I am Acehnese. if there is time, take a vacation to Aceh. Aceh has a great place for @mammasitta to visit even more to Sabang, Weh Island.

you know maam,if your intentions are good..never feel down..because every force in this universe will work with you to make them come true..believe me..you will make your dreams come true help those people too..you will finally win your battle..if i had some steem power i would have voted you with my fullest capacity..i am sorry about it..anyway just believe in yourself and all the good powers..they wont let you fail..they will help you to make it happen :)

wow.. i love it..thanks alot :)i didnt just say those words..you deserve them..you deserve them because of your good intentions :)

I can feel your positiv vibrations from far 🌱
