Meet Pak Wayan , The "Unknown" Balinese ICON , How A Tour Driver became an Art Collector of Indonesian Treasures

in #onartbali8 years ago (edited)

The first moment you meet Pak Wayan , you feel the passion , you want to hear his stories ! A simple Balinese man who traveled most of his life to secretive and hidden places in his country , so rich in culture and age-old traditions , to collect "Beauty", Indonesian Art since the 50's !

He started out as a tour guide & driver .....Made took me to his uncles home for the first time around 2004 . I was hooked ! I have so much respect and honor for the devotion , the faith he has for his Balinese Hindu religion , Gods & Goddesses , how men like him keep their culture alive.

"onARTBali" project was born many years later when the family was in financial troubles and a gallery had to be sold . I knew it was the right time to expose those hidden treasures to the whole world and help selling some of those , over 6000 pieces.

I created an amateur website by myself on weebly and went online with our first professional photographs. I also made various accounts on social media platforms and promote with one wish in mind, to find people who appreciate his collection as much as I do . Here you find some photos from our first auction . I did not sell much and at some point I was so frustrated and stopped everything , running out of cash. I had no other choice .

Then I heard about STEEMIT ! Thanks to @rok-sivante

This platform , a creative community is giving hope again , new energy and motivation . I am asking your kind feedback , especially support from art-lovers .

I am still trying to figure out what will be my next step how to finance and sponsor this project to help this man and his family . Maybe I am lucky to be able to publish a beautiful tablebook and produce a documentary.

SO for now that's what I gonna do :

I post an Interview , a few links and 2 pictures . I kept it unedited because the way of explaining his life , in his own words is more charming to understand who he is . Hope you enjoy ! It was not easy to get this done because he is a very shy and an introvert man .

He hopes that people like his collection just like in the old days ,when even famous people like Marlon Brando and Sylvester Stallone came to Bali and bought from him but those days are over as he says , in a sad voice .

Now he builds wood houses , antique Joglo's like the one in the picture

Thank you for your interest read that far  !

Mammasitta & Fam

WHOA. this is GOOD, Silvie.

even from the first paragraph alone, I could feel the magic of the experience coming through - even actually to a degree I haven't felt myself in person living here.

I've really been more a distant observer here, living in my own little bubble. I got hit with this sense right from the first paragraph that you've really IMMERSED yourself in the culture and have a deep connection and relationship with the Balinese roots & heritage.

I'm almost a bit shocked at how strongly that sense comes through, reading this.

excellently written! :-)

Hey @mammasitta
You might be surprised that it's not that hard to setup an online webshop that might be able to sell these art works. I've setup a lot of e-commerce stores, and created tons of successful websites. Let me know if you need any help! ;)

Thats so sweet of you !! Thanks much ! YES , I do need help but the problem is , I need to photograph over 6000 pieces and this costs money & more time ...Did you see my amateur website www.onartbali.com Best I could do by myself

Cant say it enough how thankful I am for your insight !
I am officially addicted to this platform ! My Bali chapter will be an interesting one for sure . book in work It will take some time but I got started and for sure I will not post it all here .
Hope you guys come back to Bali again . All this here is only a good practice !

I am so thankful that I healed self sabotage , a writers block for too many years.
#BaliOHBali has a lot to offer and it all depends what you pick out .
I am looking forward to work on many more stories about my so called " backstage" experiences . All takes time ! By the way , I wish the site could improve more !
Writing from a phone is really annoying ! It crashes , disconnects on and on

My grandfather used to restore old furniture. Chairs mostly. I grew up watching antique road show. I completely understand people who have invested in a collection such as this.

I love Grand fathers and mothers !!!! You know what I mean ??
Oh dear ! You cannot even imagine what this man has laying around 🙉
Where are you from ?

Oh yes, I know what you mean!
I'm from Portland , Oregon USA. I just got back to the states after living in Shanghai for the last four years. I was teaching Kindergarten and studying Chinese.
I have made one post so far about my life in Shanghai. https://steemit.com/adoption/@ashleymk/fostering-animals-in-shanghai
I didn't write much about Shanghai while I was actually living there but have loads of photos and stories to tell. Feeling grateful to have joined steemit at the same time as I'm ready to finally tell some stories.

Must feel crazy after china to be back in the USA . I used to live in NYC ....I have such bad internet and so hard to stay connected on my phone . I am planning to read now ! I'm sure it's interesting to work with children there . Nice to meet you !!

Yeah, been back for two months now. I feel like a completely different person. Really enjoying the fresh air over here. I feel so alive!
