New Zealand Travel Stories - #2 "The women clothed with the sun" (original drawing and article about Maori tattoo art)

in #art7 years ago (edited)

This is another drawing that I created while travelling New Zealand. As you can see it is inspired a lot by the Maori tribal tattoo patterns called kirituho and in the face tā moko. I met a lot of nice people in Aotearoa telling me stories about the meaning of these patterns.

The artist that is specialised in creating face tattoos is called tohunga ta moko and is respected a lot for his or her skills. One of this ta moko specialist told me that the design is created by the artist when he creates the tattoo. He usually knows the person and the family history of the one who gets the kirituho very well. All shapes have meaning and represent parts of the family history of the individual.

The tattoos are not made with needles but in a long and very painful procedure the artist opens the skin with deep cuts to bring the pigment inside. Because of this the skin does not keep the original shape when it is healed but it has groves. While men sometimes tattoo the whole face women usually get their ta moko on the chin.

I hope you liked this article and my drawing. There is a lot more to find out about the Maori tattoo art and I am still fascinated to find out more about it. Here you can find the link to the New Zealand story 1.

Lots of Light and Love <3

Finally... Someone who draws photorealism on steemit. I've been searching for one. Nice to meet you brother.

About your adventure.. I love it. Tatoos scare me sometimes cos they're parmanent but doesn't stop me from being amused and thrilled by it. Just see such colourful beautiful lines on that womans face.

Nice artwork

Hey there, the first one is my drawing. The other ones are actual photographs and I added the source under the pictures. If you check out my last New Zealand story you will find a more photorealistic drawing of mine. I think the ta moko is looking rally fascinating and it means a lot to the person who is getting one. It is permanent es but also sometimes permanently growing. Thank you for your comment. I will check out your works now as well <3
