Las habilidades del barquero || The boatman's skills
Un hombre erudito alquiló una barca para cruzar un río caudaloso. Al recibirlo, el barquero se expresó con frases pobres y mal construidas.
El erudito le preguntó:
A learned man rented a boat to cross a mighty river. Upon receiving it, the boatman expressed himself with poor and poorly constructed phrases.
The scholar asked him:
-Usted nunca ha estudiado gramática, verdad?
-No señor -contestó el barquero-, soy analfabeto.
-¿Supongo que tampoco sabrá historia, geografía ni aritmética?
-Tampoco, no sé nada de eso -respondió nuevamente el barquero, medio avergonzado.
-¿Por supuesto que tampoco sabrá nada de filosofía, arte o literatura? -volvió a preguntar el hombre culto con cierta pedantería.
-No señor, sólo soy un pobre barquero ignorante -dijo el hombre ya totalmente humillado.
-You have never studied grammar, right?
-No sir, replied the boatman-, I am illiterate.
-I suppose that it will not know history, geography nor arithmetic?
-Not do I know anything about that, -the boatman replied again, half ashamed.
-Of course you will not know anything about philosophy, art or literature? the educated man asked again with a certain pedantry.
-No sir, I'm just a poor ignorant boatman,- said the man, already totally humiliated.
-Pues he de decirle que un hombre sin cultura es como si hubiera perdido la mitad de su vida -sentenció el erudito.
En ese momento, la barca, arrastrada por la corriente, fue a dar contra uas rocas y se partió en dos, cayendo el barquero y el erudito al río.
-Well, I have to tell you that a man without a culture is as if he had lost half his life," the scholar said.
At that moment, the boat, dragged by the current, was to hit against rocks and broke in two, the boatman and the scholar falling into the river.
El barquero preguntó:
-Señor, señor, ¿usted sabe nadar?
-¡No!, ¡No sé nadar! -gritó aquel hombre terriblemente asustado.
-Pues me temo que hoy va a perder no la mitad, sino toda su vida señor.
Dicho lo cual, el barquero se apartó nadando.
The boatman asked:
-Sir, sir, do you know how to swim?
-No! I can not swim! cried the terribly frightened man.
-Well, I'm afraid today you're going to lose not half, but all your life, sir.
Having said that, the boatman swam away.
