Surrealist Erotica: The Doll // inspired by Hans Bellmer
Part 3 of the Surrealist Erotica Series is inspired by Hans Bellmer.
Bellmer is most remembered for his photographs and drawings of dolls he produced that were often contorted. His art is transgressive and controversial, but influential. It would make sense that he would collaborate with Georges Bataille, illustrating Bataille's Story of the Eye and Madame Edwarda, a twisted celebration of pleasure and horror. (More on Bataille in a future post)
Here, I stick to Bellmer's doll-themed work. I used some of his drawings as part of the projection and wore a nude bodysuit with doll-like Mary Jane style shoes. I tied thread around my body to represent unnatural joints, but also in reference to photos he took of writer/artist Unica Zurn, bound. Some of the shots are mirrored, staying true to Bellmer's dolls with multiple limbs.
