I Don't Like Selfies!
I have never done a self portrait and I don't feel very comfortable painting people yet. Most of my creations have been about fantasy, still life, landscapes, and animals. Since this is my first self portrait I am happy with the results, except for my nose. The nose was hard to catch the likeness of my own. I may work on the nose a bit more but I am afraid to touch anything in case I screw it up. I already scrubbed the paint off the nose once and the paper can't take much more stress. That's the difference between mixed media paper and good watercolor paper. Good watercolor paper can take a lot of stress.
More practice is needed drawing people because I was very nervous and tense painting this picture. Kinda like going someplace I've never been before. You have all these expectations and then you finally get there and it's nothing like you imagined. I've avoided drawing people because I find nature and fantasy fun and easy.
In an age when the industrial revolution was making mass-produced goods available, it also seemed to be increasingly making them ugly and diminishing the role of the artist/craftsman in society. Art Nouveau was a revolt against this ugliness and there is a strong social component to the work that we no longer see.

So may I Commission you to redo MY portrait? My current avatar was commissioned by @shayne quite some time back and only because @fulltimegeek was doing it and I wanted to be cool. But I'd like to see what your mind's eye could create for me next ; )

Hi. Reddust. Me too! I don't like selfies. I actually don't even like to make any kind of photos. But a guess you meant art selfies. I don't know why. Maybe like some tribes say it takes a part of your soul :)
I don't like taking selfies in general, I force myself to pose and I feel like a poser...hahaha
I was never a selfie person, I was on FB when it just started and my husband and I were the first in our crowd to get iPhones. I tried the selfie thing and never got into it....Thank you @luckysteem

Wow, I think it turned out great! I'm a bit late on seeing this one since I switched accounts and hadn't yet started following all the people I wanted to (p.s. this is the new account of @allstarrunner - but the same person!).
Really, I think it turned out great. The face is very well done, I'm especially impressed with the the skin tone you achieved, looks perfect. In fact, I really want to know what paint(s) you used for the skin!
When I first started drawing it was drawing faces that really got me into art, just something about seeing the actual persons face come to life in front of you (of course I had my fair share of times where it wasn't the intended person coming to life in front of me - more like a cousin or close - or even distant - relative!); but I agree with you that it is probably the hardest because it has to look "exact" or else it isn't the person! But I think you did a great job. Drawing faces definitely will test the will of an artist, especially when you're half way through and really don't like what you're seeing! But, I think it's also a great way to learn.
Anyway, I think you can successfully categorize this into the "success" folder.
I love your icon @artistchristian, I will remember to follow your new account. I used a lot of Titanium white, little bits of vermillion red, cadmium red, vandyke brown, yellow ochre and Prussian blue or maybe ultramarine blue, I have to check, I can't remember which blue. There is a blue I avoid because it does not like cadmium colors, they have a chemical reaction and turn everything muddy. I do color test first before I start applying paint just to make sure all the colors get along.
Oh man I need to practice more anatomy drawings because humans are no fun at all! My hats off to you because your faces are exquisite <3
Very impressive. I want to get into watercolor portraits but I'm quite afraid of trying to get the right skin tones (which you nailed), I have tried to cheat a little and I bought a tube of "Naples Yellow Red" by Van Gogh which is basically a "skin tone" color straight out of the tube, I figured I could adjust it as needed - but I really struggle with getting the right colors, I spend so much time on it!
I wish we could sit together and you can watch, I do mine by feel, you know how musicians play by ear. But there are a lot of good blogs on the net that I read to help me out. You can always do some color wheels. I can match my skin color perfectly but without highlights and reflections my skin tone when using gouache and watercolor looks dead. So shadow and highlights using titanium white and the proper red to match the pink if you are painting light colored skin is super important. Burnt sienna and the right shade of blue for darker skin color is important to...I love painting dark colored skin, so beautiful! I had a professor in my philosophy college courses that was from Nigeria his skin was blue black ...OMG so pretty!
Trust me, if I didn't live so far away I would love to watch! I actually do need to make a color wheel or a color chart; I made a color chart a while ago, but I got new watercolors (Mission Watercolor - which I really like and they are on the cheaper scale for artist grade, but I'm very pleased with them) and I need to go back and make all that stuff for my new colors.
Thanks for the tips for the shadows and highlights, i'm gonna need to past this response somewhere so I can refer to it!

I used a Payne's gray paint and it is a blue gray, but I don't trust my camera and our digital monitors to catch my paintings true colors.
