Spicebush Swallowtail & Caterpillar ~ (WIP)

in #art7 years ago (edited)

First Layers Of Color

Family: Papilionidae ~ Subfamily: Papilioninae

14 X 11 inches, mixed media paper, watercolor, pen and ink, watercolor illustration.

Today I applied watercolor to the (smooth) finished mixed media paper. This paper absorbs water differently than watercolor paper. Liquid tends to float on top and absorbs slowly. Working wet on wet will not give an even absorption rate on this paper. However, one can lift paint up after applied even when it is dry and move it around. I like this type of paper for illustration and fine ink pen details.

Next layer of 3 layers will include shadows to give depth. I like to use complimentary colors for shadowing, which gives my colors a bright not muddy coloring. Adding black will muddy any colors, I used Payne's gray for the black wings of the Spicebush Butterfly. Payne's gray is my favorite gray that is almost black but does not dim other colors when I blend to defuse lines and edges. Most of the yellow color are rocks and straw with sticks and dirt. I will apply layers of color to get the browns, golds, grays, and rust colors to give the gravel shape and substance.

I like it! But then I'm fond of pretty much "butterfly ANYthing," something that has been true since I was a kid. Anyway, I like the combination of pen and ink with watercolor.

After working really hard on Mr. Wednesday I needed to do a piece that makes me feel happy and peaceful. I used some of my photographs taken from my trip up the Illinois river here in Oklahoma for this painting.

Insects and amphibians have always fascinated me because they go through several transitions that don't look anything like each other.

Butterflies have caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly. But there is more! Many butterflies have several generations that specialize in one breeding season. Like the Papilionidae family, which includes the Spicebush butterfly breeds through the season, the last caterpillars to hatch in the fall put off becoming butterflies and build a cocoon wrapped in a leaf in a protected area to overwinter and become a butterfly next spring to start the cycle all over again.

thats the reason of butterflies here :) glad

I think nature is like the sun, it shines from it's own light and does not pay attention to those it touches. Nature like the sun is divinely indifferent and it's purpose is to live.

Thank you @dim753, I'm ready for the work week! I hope you didn't work too hard this weekend and found time to rest and replenish your energy.

Thanks red, I finished the work 8 hours ago, now i'm just watching some videos on youtube because in tv i can't find something good

My husband and I threw out our TV back in 2007, all advertising, news that is entertainment, and crappy programing was making us feel awful. It was such a relief, mood elevator, and stress reliever not watching TV. I like watching classic 1930's to 1950s hollywood movies on youtube...

1930 's whattt i really don't know nothing about it

I love watching old movies from the gold old days, when stories weren't violent or full of nudity.

Yeah red we have our own things to past time. I have a question do you have more coins? i mean steem and..

Do I have other cryptocurrencies besides SBD and Steem? I hold some LTC, BTC, DASH, and POT...
