Blue holly

in #art9 years ago (edited)

It was a dry but frosty day yesterday, I took the opportunity to go rummaging around the leaves to collect some of my favourite cyanotype materials.

This is a great time of year to collect leaves that have decayed but haven't turned to mush from the rain or snow. A particular favourite of mine is holly leaves.

Can you see those beautiful lace like veins?

Scanned holly leaves

I thought this would be a great opportunity to share with you a cyanotype that I had made during sunnier times! It is a cyanotype of holly leaves, the process captures the veins of the leaf left after the rest of the leaf has decayed.

I explain the process of making cyanotype prints in my post Catching the sun- creating my cyanotype prints

Leaves. I'm reminded of a time long ago. I was just a young little dude then. The teacher asked us to bring leaves to school for a similar art project. I obeyed, after much procrastination. I could see the school bus approaching. I ripped one of the largest leaves off of one of mom's tropical house plants, and headed out the door. I was so proud. My leaf turned out to be larger than the piece of paper the teacher gave us to work with. We had a laugh. That day I was the cool kid with the big leaf. It was a fun day, until I got home. The first thing I heard when I got home from school that day was, "What happened to my plant?"

Anarchy in the art room! What did you say to your mom?

I'm glad you asked. First I tried to blame the cat. The artwork evidence was in my backpack though. I used it as leverage. I think I got the whole, "It's a nice picture, but never do that again," speech. The plant lived. It was so long ago. Nearly thirty years. Fun memory. Thanks for bringing it out.

Always a pleasure to bring out memories of shenanigans!

Thank you for posting @opheliafu this inspirational tutorial if you will... with lovely results. Well done.

@opheliafu Holy blue!
I like the idea!

Blue isn't the colour you would normally associate with holly, but it looks pretty!

Thank you, happy you enjoyed it!

Very nice!
Followed.

Superb, thank you!

BTW have you ever done this with existing B&W photos? https://steemit.com/photography/@ocrdu/toning-black-and-white-photos
There are similarities in the chemistry (and the colour you get).

That is a very cool image you shared. I haven't done that, but I did do a lot of traditional black and white photographs and photograms a while back. I had my own darkroom set up, I still have the equipment now but no where suitable to do it.

That's sounds much like my story of traditional black and white photography. Have you posted those photos?
Nothing beats B&W film, but it has become too time consuming for me, almost all digital now, only very occasionally I shoot film.

No, I don't have much of that work now. I may dig around and see if there is any in one of my old portfolios. I may get back into it in the future as part of my experimentations, but I need a light-proof room.

Very nice work lady @opheliafu congratulations
