Double Standards/Play the Game - a silly comic page to get me back in the swing
Subtlety is not his strong suit...
This piece has been in the works for a while. It all started out as a simple character drawing, and then things sort of got away from me... so there wasn't much in the way of planning, and as such the layout is pretty odd, and things don't fit so great. But I still like it. lol And, even though I knew from the beginning that the layout was a bit odd, and I wished I had more room for the panels, I didn't want to re-draw it 5 times. So I took it as an opportunity to get back into the swing of drawing comic pages. Once I had it all drawn and inked, it sat for a while, while I decided whether I wanted to practice with more traditional comic book inking, or play around with color. Or both. I wound up deciding to get overly complicated and do a bunch of detailed shading with my prismacolor pencils. No, I won't be using this technique on my comic book, once I actually get back to that project... but I thought it'd be fun to push myself and play around with this page, since I already knew it had its flaws, which meant I wasn't afraid of "ruining it".
I originally started sketching out the girl (an old comic book character I'd based on myself ages ago), decided to add the guy (a British vampire, who has a thing for her, and well, flesh... he is a vampire), and they sort of took over my pencil and my mind.
Play the game. Everybody play the game of love.
~ Queen
These two have a silly way of goading each other on. They'll pretend to be pissed off, but really they kind of love it... it's a game that they can't resist playing.
Here's a look at the process:
The full page again, bad angle, but in better lighting, after fixing the ink line on her arm in the bottom left panel. (Thanks for bumping the table while I was outlining, kids.)
And a detail shot of my favorite panel. haha
(Taken before fixing that line on the arm.)
On the subject of fixing up flaws, and changing the layout of a page, does anyone out there have any suggestions for digital painting/editing programs? All I could think the whole time I was working on this, was how much easier my life would be if I could scan this page, and change the proportions/add on to the panels. I haven't really used any digital art programs in a very long time... back when I did, I used both PaintShopPro, and PhotoShop. I'm certain both have changed by leaps and bounds, and I probably wouldn't recognize any of the functions now... but I am looking to get started back into it, so PLEASE any recommendations are welcome!
Also, here are a couple of links, if you'd like to have a peek at some of my other drawings of these characters.
