Inked "Relics" elementals

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Phew!!!

There's nothing quite like squeaking in just under the wire... I've had this habit since I was a school kid, of pulling something together at the very last minute. I suppose it means I work well under pressure. And, actually, that I like to work on something until I'm satisfied, which sometimes means cutting it way too damn close. And with the deadline for entries into this round of the Trial by Comics contest ticking ever closer (about an hour from now) I am breathing a pretty big sigh of relief. lol

Post edited 02/26 to add some detail shots.

This week the theme was open, we just needed to show our inking skillz. And since I've been working toward redoing an old comic book, I thought it was the perfect time to crank out a new pic of a couple of the main characters. I may rename them, but previously they were known as "Lelia", an Earth elemental, and "Gwyn", a Fire elemental. Be on the lookout for plenty more drawings of these ladies, as well as the other characters, as I re-work the comic.

Here's a look at the sketch:

Drawn on 11"x17" "paper for pens", with HB pencil, and Micron pens. Oh, and a bit of Sharpie to fill in the cave, since I didn't have all night. lol

I actually had a lot of fun with this... I think it's the first time I've sat and done a proper comic book ink job, complete with crosshatching. It was sort of meditative in a way. Looking forward to doing more of these!

Hope you like it!

Have a great weekend!

Amazing what a difference a good ink-job does.

It's nice to see your work in pen and paper. I always find it interesting that digital artists usually work the same way, starting with pencil sketches and then inking over them.

Thanks! Yes, it's sort of amazing to watch a drawing transform through the stages... I'll sometimes show my husband a sketch, but he doesn't really get it until I've done some inking, like it translates the message I was going for. lol
Ha, yeah it's sort of funny that we follow the same process, on paper or digitally. When I've done digital painting in the past, I still did all the sketching and inking on paper.

oh this is very neat :D earth and fire, side by side :D i like it! your inking is great and the steps by steps is fabs <3

Thanks so much! I'm hoping to get a few more of the characters redesigned and drawn up, so I can share some more elementals and magic-y goodness.

Oh, also, I love the series of element sisters you did!
