Wisdom locked in rap songs

in #art8 years ago (edited)

Many people view rap only as a music genre that tells the story of rich gangsters and their lavish lifestyles. While some rap interprets fit this description and their songs are almost entirely consisted of bragging and talking about killing people and selling drugs, there are other rappers who try to pass on some wisdom and life experience, sadly these are often overshadowed by the controversial spirit of the rap music as a whole.

There are a lot of great lyrics that can make you contemplate about various hardships of life or social problems.
Some can even make you feel like they are about you, like the artist fully understands what you are currently going through. Always remember that rappers may seem like a bunch of arrogant rich criminals, but they are still people - you never know what hides behind that image of a tough gangster. Some may go trough depression and rapping might be the only way that helps them went their pain. Always try to stop and think before you judge someone.

A few examples of great, deep lyrics :

- This song is called Beautiful and it's about Eminems depression and addiction to drugs after his friend Proof died. It also tries to tell everyone that they are beautiful in their own way.

- Eminem feat. Rihanna - The monster

 - Eminem - Space bound, I think this lyric applies to a lot of people, why is it that we only want things that we can't have ?

-2Pac -Something 2 Die 4

  - 2Pac - This is not a song lyric, but it's a great quote.

- 50 cent - Many men (Wish Death)

- 50 cent feat. Nate Dogg , this quote is from Doggs part of the rap. I think you can tell what this is about, there are many relationships built around wealth that end immediately as hard times come.

I think a lot of us had a moment when we felt like this. The next part of the rap talks about how he didn't give up and made it.
*"Niggas shouldn't throw stones if you live in a glass house and if you got a glass jaw you should watch your mouth..."* -50 cent ft. Eminem- Patiently waiting
- Kendrick Lamar - Kush & Corinthians

- Logic - Young Sinatra II
Keep going forward, whatever your dreams are, whatever your achievements, don't ever stop trying.

There are many wonderful lyrics out there, this is just a very short list, but hopefully it'll show you that rap isn't only about money, guns, drugs and girls.

Hope you enjoyed it , if you did, let me know and I'll do more. (maybe different genres of music ? - let me know !)

agreed! i can't quote them right not but i have found wisdom in lots of rap songs before. JayZ and T.I. are coming to mind. good post/original

Yeah, it's very interesting when you listen really closely. It's like a painting that looks different from a far and from up close.

yes, very clever analogy

This is a nice post, hopefully it gets more recognition

@lorddominik007 Very inspirational. But EM is way more than the songs you listed. His most powerful one in my mind was this one.

Good call on the others though!

I like that one very much, but it's mainly addresed to his daughter so I didn't include it.

Strength in your projects, I invite you to comment my publication, thanks for sharing
