Zoul

Zoul and Hammerjack
This is Zoul in his daily creation-by-destruction prossess!!

At the difference of the 12 others Sub-Martians Gods, Zoul is believed to exist on Mars long before the Human colonization in the 22 century.

In Suncity folklore, he's a primal entity. A force from the prime beginning, an antique will of transformation that wipeout civilizations on Mars every 10 millions years.

Zoul is feared and fled as he often enter Suncity to crash on buildings. When you hear someone screaming his name, you'd better run.
Why such a rage and a dreadful energie? Zoul is a God of destruction but a destruction seen as part of a symbiotic system of cosmic evolution where new forms, beings and ideas emerge and are allowed by the disposal and recombination of previous entities.

This is why Zoul, despite his harmful behavior, see himself as a creator and, by extension, as an artist...

Yarrec

Yarrec and Hammerjack

Yarrec is a giant white worm and she can beam lasers with her eyes (yes, its a she 👸). She dwell in the martian canals web where she collect souls memories on countless books.

She keep reading and reading, feeding on other psyche. It is said that when you forgot something, the white worm came in your dreams for devour it. And if you have the sad feeling of an inexplicable absence, of someone you don't even know, Yarrec probably stole this person from you for her mere amusement.

There once was a giant white worm on the Old Earth too, called Yankek, and growing from Human minds for millennia. He was killed by the Vane when the great cataclysm reach his pick. It's unclear if Yarrec have herrits his soul-book collection and therefore if she know the all of this species history...

Neroo

Neroo and Hammerjack

Neroo is a galactic emanation attached, like most of the 13 sub-martians gods, to a specific communaute living in Suncity: the Giga-Craniums.

just some Giga-Craniums

Giga-Craniums species have traveled across the stars in elongated slow spaceships (like Oumuamua 😆) for so long, that they have totally forgot where there came from and where there are supposed to go.

So Neroo, in the Giga-Cranium beliefs, is like a reassuring shepherd, holding the Sol in his hand, as a lighthouse, to guide them across the darkness of space and in there everyday life.

Staying in Mars for a century stopover, the Giga-Craniums rules the organized crime in Suncity. We can often see them sealing shadow deals at the Dropout and they are in direct conflict with the Pharaoh mafia, for controlling Suncity's districts.

Neroo too is obsessed by control as he want to show Hammejack the right path, HIS right path...

Influences and Caracter design

Zoul

Yep, Zoul name came from Zuul (thats what happens when you open fridge door to other dimensions, you've get scarred for life...). The flying head thing is a mimic of Zardoz and the old wipeout martian civilization is from Carpenter's ghosts of mars. Nota: if I "borrow" ideas it's just because I have no imagination 😅

Zoul is red as blood and anger, at first I wanted his horns as a battering ram but I liked the side design, it makes his headbutt more spectacular. His mouth is huge so he can be very loud!!

Yarrec

Yarrec, the giant white worm, is derived entirely from an illustration of Bernie Wrightson in Creepy #138 (1982) that I've seen twenty years ago. This illustration, figuring a giant white worm surrounded by books, stuck in my mind until this day.
I thinks its about an adaptation of Bram Stoker's _Lair of the White Worm_ based on a older legend, and I think I've read and study this book, but I'm not sure, I've forgot...

Neroo

Neroo and the Giga-Cranimus designs also comes from an illustration. This one by the french autor Claude Plumail in Mythologias (1993). In this illustration, Triglav is represented as alien with silver skin an his three heads have multiples foreheads superposed who give their skull an high cylinder shape.
The first storyline of long drifting spaceship I encounter was in Peter F. Hamilton _The Night's Dawn Trilogy_ books but this concept can be found in many fictions (Rama, Pandorum...).
For some, the idea of being lost in space with no purpose is terrifying, so Neroo was born, to fight this fear!!

Process

This page was actually one of my first experimentations in comics and instead of drawing it all in a single page, I've combine 4 rectangular drawings 😋.

1. I've draw 4 separate Zoul and combine them on Photoshop
   
2. Add flat colors and many gardiants
   
3. I used Manga Studio for the text and balloon
   
4. Result: not enough overlay an lights!! (plus what's with this blue sky? ain't Mars Sky red?)
