Le Chant Chaton - Illustrated Wine Labels by J-VO

in #art7 years ago

Hello everyone! I hope everyone has had a great week and weekend! My family and I got to spend a little time by the pool today, soak up some sunshine and have a little bit of fun here as we approach the 4th of July!

Tonight I was thinking I would take a break from the Six Sad Stories posts and share something different so as to help keep things interesting - but no worries, I promise to post the last two illustrations in the Six Sad Stories series soon for those who are enjoying them.

Le Chant Chaton (The Song Cat)

I created these back in college - it was a fun assignment aimed at learning to generate a series of work that maintained a similar style (similar to the Six Sad Stories series). After creating the illustrations we were to place them into context. I love cats (as mentioned in my introductory post) so I chose cats - not any cats though - SONG Cats. We all know how little kitties love to howl - I have one - his name is Dexter. Multiple times a day he runs through the house howling at nothing - I swear at times he's cussing because Darla (our other female cat) has been using his bathroom - and DAMNIT that is NOT allowed. (He hates her.. we are working on this - lol) Anyway, this series is dedicated to all the little kitties who are either angrily cussing or simply serenading us with their lovely - er... yeah, right - voices.

I decided my "context" would be to create a series of wine labels from the illustrations. I have always loved wine label designs in the store and I have seen a lot of really fun ones - I mean I was in college and I have to admit I have done my fair share of wandering down the wine isle - and as an artist guilt-fully getting sucked into admiring the illustrations found on each one.

I was really into pen and ink at the time so each illustration was drawn with the quill pen and black ink, then painted with watercolors once the ink dried. I scanned them in digitally once the color was applied and used the scanned image to integrate with the typography to create the overall final label. I wanted a clean, classic, appealing label that would be fun, bright and captivating if it were placed on a store shelf.

Before I drew the final image, I worked out the stylistic approach I wanted to take with the cats, working through various positions, placement, body style, etc. as seen below.

These were the final painted compositions:

And here are the final label designs with the illustrations in context

I hope you guys enjoyed this series of song cat illustrations! Feel free to let me know what you think below and I appreciate your upvote if you liked what you saw! Until next time - Just keep steeming... just keep steeming...

Hi. It will certainly draw my attention and I would be likely to try it. Are you going to offer it for consideration to any winery? Maybe I will see your label on a wine bottle. Then I know that I need to try it. :)

:D I haven't thought of trying to offer it to any wineries.. it was something I did in college so I guess I just didn't think to take it that next step. That is a really good suggestion though! Thank you for suggesting that - :) Thank you @freakyfriday :)

You are very welcome. I find it a intersting concept. Here is another idea, did you ever thought about drawing this cats in large to sell as artwork. I can imagen some people might be interested in it to hang it on their walls. They are out of the ordinary and lot's of people love cats. :) I hope to see some more artwork from your posts. In my humble opinion i think you have talent and that the sky is the limit.

Thank you @freakyfriday - I have them in their original state as paintings so I could absolutely try to sell them - I have an account with Society6.com - I will have to upload these and see if people purchase them - you can create a lot of cool products from the artwork uploaded there. Thanks for the suggestion - I will have to let you know if I sell anything :) Thank you for the sweet compliments too - I really appreciate it!

A friend of mine sells through Artfinder. Maybe it will be a good channel for you to. :) Hope you sell them and make a name for yourself as a artist. 😀

Great suggestion!!!! I will definitely check that out, thank you so much!

You are very welcome. :)

Great post. I really loved the music note gif in the middle, what a great little touch. I love it all!

Thank you @iamwade - That is my favorite part of this whole post - I got the idea last minute and I really like how it works - I think it rather helps catch the eye! :)

Oh, absolutely. It's those little details that always make your posts such a little treat! Even if you didn't have all the extra pizzazz, your work still presents incredibly well. What a fun set!

Very cool and I loved seeing the sketches before the final product

Thank you - I was really happy that I still had them - this was a series that was from my portfolio in college - when I decided to share them I ran downstairs and pulled it out and immediately started scanning them in so I could add them with it - thank you for taking a moment to check out my work @woodywood143!
