Eroticism I | Censorship in Art |

La censura en el Arte

Art through history has strongly contended against censorship, although Art is a fundamental pillar in our society, it is the same society that has imposed numerous prohibitions regarding the expression of artistic works, although this was not always the case, in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations their gods were represented in imposing sculptures and paintings where they were shown naked, showing features of idyllic perfection, showing in this same way a quite liberal society, something that was changing with time and definitely with the arrival of the middle ages and the expansion of Christianity and the Inquisition, who had the intention of purifying society, persecuting anyone who dared to think differently, strongly prohibiting any artistic expression that will move away from religiosity. In the story some disputes are recorded as was the case of Maestro Miguel Ángel, who was branded immoral for his magnificent work The Final Judgment, whose scene portrays souls of naked human beings which rise to the heavens or fall to the abysses, work which was later modified by order of Pope Pius V by Daniel da Volterra, disciple of Michelangelo, who was commissioned to paint cloths to cover the naked parts.

Censorship in media and social networks

The media censorship is not something new, it is something that has been present in our society since the appearance of the printed media, by the influence of governments or companies that feel panic of public opinion, a problem that was aggravated by the modernization of said means, today it would be a great controversy to show on national television a work of nude art totally uncensored, be it painting or photography, while the reports on robberies, murders and kidnappings are broadcast to all audiences during primetime. Although Social Networks intended to be a space with Freedom of Expression, in recent years there has been a constant and ascending conflict about what is politically correct and what is not, causing certain restrictions regarding the content that It can be shown to the public. As time passes, the prohibitions of certain contents become stronger, this being worrying for many artists who in their work show the beauty of the human body with total naturalness, who show eroticism and sexuality as something extremely human, something that identifies us in many ways. It is very likely that these content restrictions reach the point where social networks, be Facebook, Instagram, Twitter among others, are as strict as conventional media in an attempt to adapt the community to a content "Family Friendly", cataloging nudes as "Inappropriate Content". While Freedom of Expression is the fundamental principle of social networks, which were created to share that content that would be impossible to appreciate in conventional media, I believe that a balance must be maintained, first of all, clarifying that Pornography and Eroticism are two totally different things, and normalizing the Erotic content to the point where the vast majority of society accepts that the naked human body and its sexuality is the greatest proof of the magnificence of our own existence.

The process

This work is an absurd and very basic attempt to replicate a beautiful illustration that I found browsing the internet, I found it by mistake and downloaded it, I found it quite interesting, I have seen it on a couple of occasions browsing Facebook however I have not found a direct link to the original work, in any way, I want to emphasize that this is just an attempt to replicate and that the original work is not mine.

The colors

This work has an aura of intimacy and darkness, is full of cold tones, which vary between blues and blacks, contrasted by some areas of warm colors that in my opinion represent the warmth of the company, the connection between lovers.

The Finished Artwork

The main reason why this work caught my attention the first time I saw it was because it reminded me of a painting I did a little over a year ago, which is also a replica of an illustration, however the I replied using oil paintings, it was one of my last paintings, it was my first attempt to paint impressionism and it is one of my favorite paintings, it is still for sale, meanwhile it will continue to decorate one of the walls of my house.

For the first two parts (which I'm surprised for once that anything art with a foreign title somehow isn't French but Spanish), I shall just copy-n-cut what I responded below to another person in an attempt to expand the conversation that was under a very spidery spider:

With such an any a case, even that censorship doesn't come from a vacuum; it has to be instigated from complex indirect economic influences that are reflected through direct cultural-ideological influences. After all, the human consciousness is set as put best by Friedrich Engels, "[a]ctually, each mental image of the world system is and remains limited, objectively by the historical situation and subjectively by its author's physical and mental constitution." So the state of affairs is that there's a conflict of interests that have yet to be resolved, a contradiction one might say that society is harboring but yet not choosing to resolve such. How society chooses to move forward is dependent very much by the means that are chosen to get to there and if the end goals are even accomplished.

A hypocrisy I must say that we see many "male" nude arts being celebrated by even Catholic Church authorities (with some few exceptions like the leaves covering up the Final Judgement scene in Michelangelo's artwork for the Sistine Chapel's ceiling). In the case of "explicit" arts that definitely would've been tagged with a "Venus" for non-males, this is pretty much a hangover from the decades (dare I say even centuries) of old that has been challenged many a times - even their "insiders" had done the deed as well. Yet this ideology is still being reproduced since there's something for society to "benefit" from such a conservatism as that. That and vampires don't necessarily die if everybody moves out of the estate.

To get to the remastering of an original art piece (of which felt like some abstract sensuality / abstract impressionism / neo-post-impressionism / I'm running out of fake and real art movement names here), I must say this is very faithful while undoing the "self-censoring" of the "memory" aspect to the sensuous scene. In comparing both pictures, the trade-off for the memory's celebration (and in a double movement, dirty self-censoring) of the scene is a pretty political call for the end of censoring "sexual" arts as it depicts more clearly the scene that is being carried out here. That is to say: that for the unconscious sneering of censorship of a sexual scene became a conscious resistance to the current state of affairs that as a base from a call to a new Social Order that expands the horizons and goes beyond the limits of contemporary Social Order.

And of course the obligatory quote: "it is right to rebel against reactionaries" - Mao.

Congratulations for the @curie upvote, happy painting and happy steeming!

I think portraying something that is natural in life is an art in itself. Less is more they say and this painting reflects just that. I think it is more erotic than if it was in total detail. I like your other painting as well which is still hanging in your home by the way.

This is a very interesting theme, @connor-russo. Do you know @clareartista ? She joined the Steem Network because her works were being censored on other Social Media sites. Glad she found a voice, here!

Thanks for connecting us! I don't think of my work as erotic at all, @trincowski - but the subject of what mainstream media is censoring, in calling out nude art as porn, is a deeply complex subject, absolutely... It needs lots of discussion and taking apart....

Anything with female breasts, they block automatically. But male breasts and bare male asses are OK for them. The times we live in are crazy!!! Crazy!!!! 😅 😅 😅

Lovely review of the art you have there. The painting work is really mind blowing. I love the abstraction nature of the work. And it really made the concept to flow more and more.

Love the reflected light on the couple. Art can capture so many things including emotion not only of the topic or subject being portrayed but also that of the artist themself! Nice paintings!

Nice artwork👍👏 I think art has an another values out of content. Like usage of media.

Hi @connor-russo - I too have had my work censored on mainstream social media - and not because of it being erotic either...

There is a worldwide backwards movement into closed thinking which is trying to suppress the great upwelling of human sentience in art, which is a form of directly-transmitting wisdom into the collective consciousness...

But the mainstream doesn't understand how to classify it (it can't be compartmentalised), and so throws it into the 'porn' cellar and keeps it locked up there...

The mainstream collective continue to be fed absurdly shallow and meaningless information every day, and have no idea how they are progressively being numbed....

Unfortunately, The elites decide to censor everything that is revolutionary and has potential to bring the human beings out their madness spell. You've explained it very well.

And, that painting is simply amazing. Looks like they are losing their fixed indenties and dissoving in to the existence. What a wonderful moment!

Thank you for sharing and have a great day! :)

Beautifully put, @himalayannomad <3 Thank you for speaking to truth in art!!
