The city of Surabaya contains a philosophy of struggle symbolized by water and land. In addition, the city of Surabaya contains a myth about the story of the fight between suro fish (sura) and boyo (crocodile). It is thought the word appears after the fight. Based on the myth, formed the symbol of the city of Surabaya in the form of a monument surrounded by suro fish and crocodiles are fighting.
The municipal mayor of the Second Level Region of Surabaya, Mr. Soeparno made Decision Letter no. 64 / WK / 75 on Surabaya's Anniversary. The decree decided that on 31 May 1293 was Surabaya City Day. The date is based on the decision of some historians established by the Surabaya government, that the city of Surabaya is derived from the word suro ing baya, meaning courage to face the danger that came from the defeat of Mongol forces by Javanese forces led by Raden Wijaya on 31 May 1293.
