Steemit Basic Income Giveaway (Words)

in #alldutchenglish6 years ago (edited)

Thanks for all the responses to last week's Your Country Question! I did leanr quite a bit about some of the countries that I knew very little about, and it is always good to see the strengths and weaknesses in your beloved (or less beloved) homelands.

This week, I am curious about words. There are some words that rub me up the wrong way, and other words that I like very much to be using as I think they describe exactly what I mean. However, I may use a word in one context (thinking it is the best thing in the world for the situation), whilst another person thinks it is the most irritatingly overused or hackneyed way of describing the situation.

Anyway, I'm no poet, my skills lie in fields that are removed (but related) to the spoken word. Even still, there are many words that I really like hearing the sound of, and others that I just can not stand!

My Question

Unsplash

  1. What word/words are your favourites? Why? It could be the meaning that is implied to you, or just the sound and rhythm of the word!
  2. What word/words are really annoying to you? Again why?

My sample answer

Favourite Words

ELEGANT

I love this word! For me, coming from a math/science background, it is a solution that is beautiful in it's simplicity yet complex in it's implications. From a musical background, it is a beauty that isn't forced. Elegance (for me) implies an inner confidence, a simple conviction of purpose or being.

LEKKER

This is a word that is bordering on the annoying for me. It is a Dutch word that is used to describe food that is tasty. However, it seems to be used to describe everything. A girl/boy can be lekker, your sleep can be lekker... anyway you get the idea.

However, the reason that is currently a favourite word of mine is the fact that my little 2 year old says it (for food). However, she accompanies it with an approximation of this waving hand gesture (see video below). Apparently that is a thing in Netherlands?!?!? I had no idea, our first child never did that!

Irritating Words

NATURAL

This is a word that gets bandied around in music rehearsals quite often, and it irritates me to no end. After all, what is natural for one person is possibly un-natural for another person, especially in a field where the idea of natural-ness is completely subjective and based upon present emotions and past experiences. ARRRRGH!

GEZELLIG

This is a Dutch word that is tricky to describe and translate. It means cosy or comfortable, however it seems to often be used in a way (especially in performances of music) that seems to prize mediocrity. A performance can be gezellig, if it was pleasant, not necessarily engaging or gripping or emotional, just pleasant. It really is one of my least favourite Dutch words...

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0 SBD and 1.811 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

@filotasriza3

@curatorcat

... and a special one SBI share for @guchidan for his epic comment!

Sort:

I like the word "Inspirational"
Tied of the word "Epic" i.e. that's really "Epic", dude

Inspirational and the roots, great choice! Nothing like an inspiring leader or idea to bring out the best (or worst) in all of us! Epic is also a word that is quite overused these days. It really should be reserved for the really incredible, rather than an off hand compliment...

With a super late entry:

'Lekker' is a word I very recently found out about :P it sounds super cool and I will genuinely be using it now

'Alright' is a word that I don't appreciate. Everyone uses it as a greeting in England (myself included on occasion) but it just leads to the reply 'alright' or 'yeah i'm good' which either doesn't make sense or is a super dull way to start a conversation

Ha ha, very good! Glad you discovered a new word, although it might sound out of place and exotic where you live!

I had never heard of 'Alright' being used as a greeting! It seems like a premptive strike against the question, 'How are you?'. Except it got out of hand, and now no one asks the actual question that spawned the answer!

My favourite word is Democracy. Not only me a lot of people in myanmar like this word becasue we never get fullfledge democracy.

My least favourite word is Junta. I hate Junta a lot because they make my country to become a LDC country.

Dear @mmunited, i am sorry about your living situation in a country where the freedom is not fullfilled and you just dream what in our countries nobody care anymore...

Democracy is a great thing, but it is only one part of the equation! Strong institutions like courts and free press are essential parts of the system, hopefully it is something that can evolve in the your country!

I walk in, bruised as a sleepy warrior from a long travel. Holding only in my palms a comment and extra RC. I try to speak, but...
You: "What took you so long?"
Me: "Kept you waiting, huh?"

Anyways, shits and giggles aside, I'm back and with a passion after the HF20-pocalypse. Time to get back to commenting and posting, surely didn't took me nine years to get back to the groove here.

Those magic words you've been waiting for

  1. Compound, or the combination of words. This quite literally is a God send to work around word-limits in contests. More-so, compounding words can create accidental or purposefully new meanings that cuts the time and word amount to get at what you want to say. Even so, slippery figurative language benefits with it and we honestly need to bring back kenning for the modern day.
  2. Labour, or labor, is a word that is highly interesting for the function it takes on within both the philosophical and economic worlds. Philosophically, it has a long history to describe mere actions with dignity to even important subjects worth discussing. Economically, it's truly a thing we cannot ignore - else entire economies fall when labour is ignored. Labour also is delicate in such quiet topics as in the birthing of individuals, effort to achieve a task and, overall, our biggest unifying signifier that should take precedence but hasn't been able to yet.
  3. Words, why else than not bringing this up!?! I mean, this is evident with the post in-itself. We have many words to describe one thing and words to describe many a things. Language truly ensnares us as we ensnare it, that is to say that we are no bigger than language itself. Also the fact that we can even symbolize things to an utterance is quite beautiful to be quite honest.

Those words I rather die

  1. RC, also known as "Resource Credits" and not RC cola, is probably two letters I like to never see touch each other for quite a while. RC had really screwed over the Steemit site for quite a few days, disrupting many a schedules and the fact that even whales got impacted heavily by it. Truly, if they had really cared about steemit, they could've made the bandwidth system actually work and not adopt a whole new system. But what do I know!
  2. Smart is a word that often gets thrown in as a mere synonym of intelligent when it shouldn't be. Smart is a description of pain and how much one is willing to smart oneself to get a task done, essentially who's willing to struggle to get a job done. And in this case, I hate the connotation with only Academia or the "Intelligentsia" in this case and not the word - yet a signified nonetheless that shouldn't be limited to them. For smart is a beautiful word to discuss the efforts of labouring, yet condescendingly only applied to the intelligent and such - when wise and less intelligent people have made smart moves without having to labour as much on the mental faculties. Coincidentally I rather want to demean the part of the Intelligentsia when they haven't a clue of what smart means in other areas and never really intelligent but factoid heavy.
  3. Harmony, much in the same vein as smart, I hate a certain application of this word and how 'twas and continues to be abused to-day. Whenever someone slaps "Harmony" or "Harmonious" to anything, they either are implying a inherently pacifist or an order that you can't criticize since everything is orderly and not chaotic at all. I'm sorry, but a harmonious order can definitely be a structure chaos that goes about completing its vicious cycles and the fact that where its slapped is to cover up crucial details. Nature is said to be harmonious, but any sincere ecologist would tell you right away that Nature, on the contrary, is a series of disasters after disasters that can recuperates and benefits from such. Take the case of a wildfire disaster, Nature doesn't morn the dead but slowly regrows there and continues to develop the area yet again. Am I saying that what humanity is doing, pollution and climate change, is right? NO! I'm merely stating to not be surprised of any victories we have against Nature, for she shall exact her revenge in equal or more devastating parcels!

Heh, nice one! All of us got a bit battered around by HF20, but I think things seem to be coming back on track again....

Compounding words are great, you must love German then! The ability to just chain words together until you have an incredible monster of a word with a pretty specific meaning! It's like having a while sentence in a single word!

The word word is also interesting! I hadn't really thought about that. The words we know and use really do capture (imperfectly) our character and our past shared experiences and culture. That's a great thought!

Ha ha, rc... I am pretty sure that they needed to fix the bandwidth problems, and it wasn't possible to jury rig a method of different costs for different types txn on the chain. At least I suspect so....

Lol, smart and pain! That is a secondary meaning that really has gone out of favour! And I agree with your thoughts on harmony, it does ask the question... Who's harmony..

I hope I'm still on time! I had meant to post this a couple of days earlier, but couldn't because of the HF20 RC issues.

I'm not sure about a "favorite" word, but I agree with @zen-art that "thingy" is fun! Here in Brazil, we have something similar, "coiso," which is not a word ("coisa" is the word for "thing," but "coiso" isn't a word). It's even crazier when a person informally transforms "coisa" ("thing") into a verb, "coisar" ("to thing"). "Você tem que coisar aquele coiso!" Would translate to something like, "You have to thing that thingy!" And somehow the other person understands exactly what needs to be done :D .

I don't like swear words, mainly the stronger ones like... you know, the "F" word and the "SH" word. I get that it's normal to feel the urge to curse when something bad happens. But I especially dislike when people decide to throw these words left and right in normal conversation and use them to replace anything. Something like, "Let's finish this sh***..." I'd prefer if they would use "thingy" instead! :P

No problem, all of us got taken down by HF20! Hopefully, it does leave the way for a stronger Steem backbone which will place the way for a more widespread adoption...

Ha ha, I live the thingy analogue! Coisa... I have to remember it for when I meet with my Brazilian friends.

Agreed with the overuse of swear words... It is like a teenager trying to shock with profanity or by being 'bad'. It's not bad arse, it's just annoying and reduces the effect for when it really means something!

My favourite word: Serendipity

It means looking up for the positive aspects of everything and every situation, even when it all appears so dark and gloomy.

I have never heard of that word before... And suddenly, two bands I enjoy picked it up as a title for a song.

Serendipity by The Agonist

Serendipity by Infected Rain

My least favourite word: Politics

Because 99% of them are leeches and should be in jail.

I have a song for them, too:

Great to have song choices to illustrate your words! Politics is also a less favourite word, it really implies that you are playing the game rather than trying to achieve substance. A waste of time and effort, but on the other hand an essential part of garnering support for ideas...

Interesting about your take on serendipity, I had a different connotation in mind. That it was a linking of two (of more) unrelated events to point out a path forward that was unexpected.

MANAGEMENT

  • I like this word. Its meaning is very deep and wide for me and for my life. Indeed all of our lives I think. You can use this word in every field as you like. Very important word and I like most.

PAIN

  • This is a word that I don't like most. No one contact with it. Me too.

Good management is part of being prepared! It's can be a great word! Although, sometimes over managing things caused problems in efficiency and innovation!

I don't think anyone likes the thought of pain though...

Dear @bengy , I think ' over managing ' means 'fully controlling'. Really, management is only perfect simple word. There is no 'good management' and no ' over '. Management is only management. How about you? ( If you know our language, I can explain more. ) 😀

Ha, fair enough! I'm not sure which language is your native one, but I only know English and Dutch!

yeeess thanks a lot!!

in this challenge i won't take part in cause honestly i don't have words that i like or don't like :P (maybe it has to do with the part that English isn't my first language so i pretty much don't care :P :P ).

Good luck to the participants though, these challenges and the whole initiative is awesome!

It can also be in Greek, I did one for English and one for Dutch, Dutch being my second language.

hmmm in that case i will choose as one of my favorite greek words:

Φιλότιμο

I really like that word because there is no actual translation in English! You can say it with an English pronunciation as Filotimobut both i are read as e.

There isn't a singe meaning in that word and many times the tourist might have heard it as a "Greek Filotimo". the meanings varies per situation and phrase and ti can mean proud as a person, generous, kind, that you do your job with humility while at the same time try to help others, that you show hospitality towards others like tourists

So as you can see it's like a "box" that contains all the good words :P

And as an annoying world:

Παίζω

In English it is the world play. When we were kids the world play meant insta joy for me but later on it took a different turn. An example was that when i played that required to be on a team i usually saw in chat phrases like "how you play like this stupid" etc etc not only at me but generally and ofc it's wasn't games that we play for fun but competitive. (in most people's minds)

Also every time i am in the gym and someone wanna do an exercise with the dumbbells i have or machine i am (and not just me it's generic) he will come and say "you play here" :P

Thanks! I love hearing about words that don't have a literal translation or a one to one mapping in another language! These words give us such an unique insight into the particular culture. Thanks for introducing me to them!

My favorite word is "Love" because where he is, the atmosphere is more pleasant, happier.

The word I most detest is "Discrimination", because this leads to the struggle among the citizens themselves, the cataloging, the rejection of another human being ...

It is an interesting pair of words that you have chosen, sometimes I wonder if they are linked together. With love, it implies a preferred grouping...
