CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

At Rupert's house, Sylvia sat on a couch in the lounge, holding Jane in her arms. She frequently closed her eyes, whispered prayers and kissed Jane's forehead. She was obviously scared and the FBI agents saw it too.

There were many of them in the house. Some were in the lounge; by the door and the windows; some were in the other rooms, making sure that no one else entered the house.

The leader of the squad that was deployed to the Blake's residence saw Sylvia's anxiety and fear, and decided to talk to her. He walked to where she was sitting and sat beside her.

"Mrs. Blake. I would like to reassure you of your safety, in here, with us," he said.

She just nodded.

"We've got twenty highly-trained agents protecting this house. The perimeter is covered by snipers and every point of entry is guarded by my men. If there is anyone who tries to come near this house, unauthorized, we will capture them before they even think of doing anything."

"Thank you, sir. I understand."

The leader nodded his head and then got up from the couch. He then walked away from her and joined a group of agents who were guarding the door.

Tears fell down Sylvia's cheeks as the pressure got to her.

I don't understand. Why would someone want to kill us? These agents won't tell me what's wrong. 'Classified information' they say. All they said was that they had reason to believe that our lives were in danger. I wish Rupert was here.

"Mommy, why are you crying?"

Sylvia wiped the tears off her one cheek, then another and smiled.

"It's nothing, Jane. I love you, okay?"

"I love you too, Mommy," she said laid her head on Sylvia's chest.

Jane glanced at the television and noticed a picture of someone she knew.

"Look Mommy, it's Daddy! Daddy is on TV!"

Sylvia turned her head to look at the TV, and saw Rupert's picture displayed on it. The television's sound volume was muted, but she could read the captions.

There it was, written in red, with a breaking news alert beside it:

Leadsway's Head of Internal Security, Rupert Blake's residence under FBI protection, as assassin is on the loose.

The agent's leader had heard Jane's remark and had since deduced what was happening. He stood in the lounge, watching the TV and observing Sylvia's reaction. He then walked to her and sat beside her.

Sylvia held her mouth and silently cried.

"Mrs. Blake. Once again I want to—"

Suddenly, they both heard the sound of a helicopter flying above the house. The agent's leader quickly took out a radio device from his pocket.

"Agent Four, come in," he said.

"Agent Four here."

"Whose chopper is that?"

"The logo says Falcon News Network, sir."

"Okay. Hold your fire, until I get confirmation. But be on the lookout for any suspicious movements."

"Roger that, sir."

The leader then stood up and took out his mobile phone, and then dialed a number. As he waited for a connection, he said "Put the Falcon News Network channel on," to Sylvia.

Sylvia changed the channel using the remote and immediately saw live footage of the house's aerial view.

"Put me through to Dickens," he said, when his call was answered.

"Dickens. Can you tell me what the hell your helicopter is doing flying over the Blakes' house? You are jeopardizing the integrity of my mission. Tell your crew to back off now, or I take them down."

He slammed the phone on the table, and it noticeably broke. Immediately, an agent hastily came into the lounge.

"Sir, the lady is here."

"Good. Escort her in."

The lady came to the Blakes' house, being escorted by the FBI and the police. The FBI agents let her in and, without delay, she went straight to Sylvia.

"Mrs. Blake. I know you don't know me, but I have something to tell you," she said.
