Why running clears the mind?

in #running9 years ago

Are you suffering a creative block? Run. Are you at a crossroads and do not know what decision to make? Run. Do you feel sad, anxious or angry? Run. If you want to clear your mind, running does not fail.

Surely there is something extraordinary in the swing of hands and feet movement, which ends synchronizing and catching our mind. In fact, it is difficult to run and keep self - pity or recrimination. When we run simply reached a different degree of clarity, we focus on the here and now, we can be fully present . Why?

Running stimulates the growth of new neurons

A good race can make us feel like new and, in a way, it is a feeling that is not far from what happens in reality. After three decades of study, neuroscientists have identified a link between aerobic exercise and cognitive clarity we experience then. However, the most interesting finding in this regard was made

in the field of neurogenesis. Until recently it was thought that brain neurons die irretrievably but later discovered that in fact, new neurons in the brain occur throughout life. And the best activity to promote the birth of these neurons is precisely aerobic exercise of moderate intensity. Even more interesting is that many of these neurons grow in the hippocampus, a brain region linked to learning and memory. Therefore, this could explain, at least in part, why to take power memory. The key to reaping its benefits , however, lies in running to sweat a little for an average of 30 to 40 minutes. Only then can we stimulate the growth of new neurons.

It increases blood flow to the frontal lobes

Running is also beneficial in other ways. In fact, there have been changes in the activity of the frontal lobes, which play a leading role in the control of emotional states and decision-making. It has been appreciated that when people perform physical activity frequently until it became a habit, blood flow to this region of the brain increases. That might be the real reason after running can think more clearly, focus better, find solutions and make better decisions.

In fact, how your areas are also involved in emotional regulation, that could be the explanation why we can better control our emotions after running. This was proven by psychologists at Harvard University, who made some people running for 30 minutes and undertake other stretching exercises, then see a drama.

After the movie, everyone should indicate how they felt. Fifteen minutes later and half an hour later, they returned to indicate their mood. Astonishingly, those who had run recovered faster from the emotional blow inflicted by the film. This tells us that running is not only a healthy habit but helps keep the young brain and allows us to clear the mind, lightening the weight of negative emotions and helping us to find new perspectives.

a nice walk around the lake at #naiharnbeach does the trick for me :)

that's a perfect place to get your daily dose :)

I'm not a fan of racing, only for short distances. Running is not very good for people who are overweight. Because running, essentially jumping from one foot to the other. And people who are overweight, suffer joints. Therefore, I would recommend - a bicycle.

Cycling is a better alternative - exercises the muscles without putting pressure on the joints.

Humans were never meant to run on hard pavement, there is no "give" in it to absorb shock. so all the stress goes back up the leg. Running on the beach or on grass is fine, but most people don't have access to those types of terrains.

It depends on how you run. If you are a heal striker then yes that will send the shock waves up your leg and into your joints. I'm 55 and became a marathon runner. I run in what they call minimalist shoes which don't have much of a heal and make you run more on your forefoot. This makes you run more like a ninja ;) But you have to work up to these shoes because our feet have been in shoes like a cast most of our lives. Oh I also love cycling. It is good to mix it up.

indeed a good alternative for running @vi1son

Cycling is a good choice. I'd also give swimming a try or even running in water with belt!

I hate running, but this was well written so have an upvote!

appreciate your insights and thank you :)

Good article! I started running again and I can vouch for this!

that's great! thanks too for the vote:)

I like running. It's so wonderful! Thank you for the article!

I don't doubt your premises but it would be neat if you linked to your sources. I'm a little overweight and I prefer to weight lift but I'm going to either walk, run or yoga in the morning to get my day started off right.

that's a great way to start the day, some of my overweight friends also opt to lift to and focus on their diets to reduce weight. here is an article related to my post http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/exercising-to-relax, hope you'll find it helpful.. i will keep in mind to include my sources the next time, thanks :)

Siempre que puedo salgo a correr, despeja la mente, ayuda a mantenernos sanos, mejora el sentido del humor y el estado de ánimo; el deporte en general es una gran medicina para el cuerpo y el espíritu.

I absolutely agree with you. When I return home after jogging, I feel incredibly relaxed. Running helps to get rid of negative emotions.

exactly! all negative energy are released which make the whole day great

Running clears my head as well. I'm a dedicated yogi, but when I'm really distraught or anxious running is the quickest and most reliable way of shifting my mood. 👍🏽

yes, indeed a great way to relax :)

Great article. Yes, when I run that is the time my creative juices are flowing. Yesterday I was out for my 10 mile run and cut it just to 2 when I had a great idea for the steemit community. Normally I continue running but this was a good one.

great! 10 miles definitely a long way to go but worth it :)
