Cycling is a better alternative - exercises the muscles without putting pressure on the joints.

Humans were never meant to run on hard pavement, there is no "give" in it to absorb shock. so all the stress goes back up the leg. Running on the beach or on grass is fine, but most people don't have access to those types of terrains.

It depends on how you run. If you are a heal striker then yes that will send the shock waves up your leg and into your joints. I'm 55 and became a marathon runner. I run in what they call minimalist shoes which don't have much of a heal and make you run more on your forefoot. This makes you run more like a ninja ;) But you have to work up to these shoes because our feet have been in shoes like a cast most of our lives. Oh I also love cycling. It is good to mix it up.

indeed a good alternative for running @vi1son

Cycling is a good choice. I'd also give swimming a try or even running in water with belt!
