Abuse Series: Deceit

in #abuseseries6 years ago (edited)

Welcome back to the Abuse Series! The series has been on pause for a few months, and I am glad to restart my contributions. This will be the start of Volume 2.

Finding plagiarism can be a complicated matter for any anti-abuse initiative. Sometimes, it is as simple as a @cheetah tipoff or a well-constructed content with poor format. Other times, plagiarizers seek to cover their trails by more devious methods.

One example of covering their trail is through article spinning. Spinning is a strategy developed by content creators to improve their visibility. It involved the process called search engine optimization. I will not be covering the historical usage and developments in this post.

In the context of plagiarism, this often involves content with different wording. Comparing spun articles to the source usually reveals similar sentence structures and orders. Of course, that only applies to simple case of spinning.

On the blockchain, it is not uncommon to encounter a spun article consists of several sources. One of my experiences with an intensive spinning attempt received the following response:

spin.png

Why did I suspect this person of spinning? I have seen the author commit several instances of photo plagiarism a few posts back. The need for surveillance came as a result of them editing their posts to appear innocent in the public.

Investigating spun articles requires copious amount of time and energy. In my experience, they can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over two hours to prove the perpetrator to be guilty. I am unaware of any efficient automation for detecting such fraud in existence.

Furthermore, such practice is also accompanied by rampant use of promotional services. Some may even work in conjunction with voting rings. If it was not for the fact that the abuser would have slid by with ill-gotten gains, I would not have bothered.

I am all for reforming and educating plagiarizers for their transgressions. But, that is not always possible as it takes a certain level of malice to construct a façade to conceal such deeds. The truth, then, is that some people have chosen their paths as bad actors from the beginning.

Here is a more recent example that involved this type of coverup. To summarize, the Steemian chose to repost articles he found online as their own. The @steemcleaners took action, which prompted the content thief to dispute in Discord.

It would appear many do not understand the implications of a blockchain. Nothing is ever erased from the records even if edited. There are tools that allow even average Steemians to view these revision histories. My personal favorite has been @drakos' tool at scribe.steemians.info.

This Steemian's action brought the following response from the @steemcleaners:

Needless to say, this person deserved the flags they received. Despite the edits made to the posts, they still did not remedy the situation. In fact, it worsened due to their attempt to cover up their actions.

The consequences for the individuals when convicted of plagiarism vary. Each entity has its own processes for dealing abuses on the platform. It is up to the individuals to approach these entities and come up with a solution to the problem. This usually involves a change in behavior on the blockchain.

Those involved in anti-abuse projects are also expected to keep the goal in mind. The goal is to encourage preferred behavior while mitigating the undesired ones. Flags are part of the tool kit to raise community awareness. They are not the ultimate solution to the ever-present issues such as plagiarism.

Do not plagiarize. Enjoy your time on the platform by being you.

Excellent write-up on issue of spinning. Yes, personally, I would prefer spinning in a fairy tale (Rumpelstiltskin, anyone?) vs the stuff we deal with on this platform.

I remember dealing with one of these spinners, @cryptokraze, that was boosting their posts like crazy with @smartsteem. His ways finally caught up with him after a good couple of @steemcleaners flags and is now powering down. These kind don't always get caught but it's a great feeling when they do. Post

As we both know, often these kind just pack up and move to another accounts. Which makes our task all the more difficult and, of course, the sly editing is another aspect we must be aware of which I am glad you pointed out. Also, the tool you refenced is another good one for any abuse fighters toolbox.

Glad you brought this issue up. Bringing awareness is essential. Spinners may be acceptable on vehicle wheels or as a passing teenage fad but they are never OK on the blockchain.

Thank you kindly.

We are all in this eternal struggle together.

Thank you for your review, @anthonyadavisii!

So far this week you've reviewed 1 contributions. Keep up the good work!

Abuse is a problem on the steem blockchain, but if you think about it. It's a great backhanded compliment, it shows that steem has real value. Enough to motivate people to spend time and energy to earn some. Unfortunately, these misguided souls have chosen the dark side.

I am very hopeful for the future of STEEM as I have first hand experience of the great work done by people like yourself, @enforcer48.

We now have @steemflagrewards that gives monetary rewards to abuse fighters. I think this is a game changer and it's something we didn't have when I first joined this platform.

I hope to read more about the work being done by @iamstan and utopian on the #antiabuse front and make some meaningful contributions.

Let's get our house in order, we are expecting a lot of new guests, if @ned's "destiny" project is what most expect it to be.

@kabir88

I agree that abuse is a problem, but I think working against it will eventually turn into a huge boon. Abuse is a big issue in the whole cryptosphere and has been since the beginning. The visibility of the abuse, and the ability of normal users to intervene against abuse is something I think sets steem apart in a great way. There will always be bad actors but my hope is that we can learn to manage it on this blockchain. Then, if I may be so precariously optimistic, what is learned here could possibly be used to help fight abuse effectively in other blockchain projects. But perhaps there will be no such interoperable lessons to be learned, or we could fail to learn them or even fail to substantially mitigate abuse.

But here's hoping we can!

Enough to motivate people to spend time and energy to earn some. Unfortunately, these misguided souls have chosen the dark side.

Well said! There are definetly so many legit ways to make money on here! Yes you might not make a lot (its hard for small accounts!) but it is much more satisfying than essentially robbing people

Unfortunately it's not just small accounts, there are large accounts too who spam the platform with low to little value content. Self vote or vote via a proxy and then extract the resulting Steem from the reward pool. A lot of this steem is quickly dumped onto exchanges suppressing the price

it shows that steem has real value. Enough to motivate people to spend time and energy to earn some.

And that value is derived from investors and people who are building dapps and communities. They are essentially trying to ride off with other people's accomplishments.

We shall see how @ned's project bring about new changes.

Great post I enjoyed reading it. You covered a tough subject and I am glad you did it and not I.
I have spent easily 2 hours on one post or even and entire day after disputes when it was a spun article like this.
Good job.

The worst part is, this type of plagiarism is generally not apparent unless something else gives it away.

Many times I have that feeling I know its plagiarism and cant find the smoking gun. And I quit looking because of the time consumption involved.

I totally feel you in that regards.

Definitely a time-consuming head-scratching issue. We don't have a really good tool to check for this type of abuse.

I've been looking up how to use the search engines with wild cards or what nots. See if there's a better way to detect how much an article is spun.

If it's any consolation, at least they don't look like low-quality crap posts on the surface. Still wrong nonetheless.

My personal opinion is there are different levels of plagiarism and 💩.

Direct plagiarism = bad 💩
Spun plagiarism = worse 💩💩 (because it's trying to hide it)
Any plagiarism + trying cover up after being caught red handed = worst 💩💩💩

But most people tend to stay in the 💩 to 💩💩 range.

But I totally agree on the spinning and difficulty, sometimes you can get lucky and find it within a minute, but other times it can take a while, especially if its spun from another language.

Btw, who's that handsome banana in the photos 😂👌

I believe I have seen a few worst 💩💩💩 level users in the @steemcleaners Discord. Those were always great screenshots for future educational purposes.

The person in the photos? It's your cousin. Thought he was a plantain. jk :P

"I paid for those post... where's my money"

Well fuck that guy too. He deserved every single flag he gets. In an ideal world the original author can sue that POS using the Steem Blockchain as proof of plagiarism.

Great work. @steemcleaners is doing a service to the community.

Some people and their logic, right?

We are better off without them.

I am all for reforming and educating plagiarizers for their transgressions

Yeah I think we should be educating but its a fine line - in my experience trying to talk to these people they either ignore me or act abusive back at me.

Something does need to be done about it though - it isnt as bad at the moment with the dip in the market, but they will be back when the prices rises (finally!). So we really need some help in place for when t happens - I really hated Steem for a while when there was so much BS spam and scam attemps going on.

I alway try and educate my followers on spams and scams going on so they can avoid them!

It will feel like a thankless task, but you know those in anti-abuse will appreciate your effort.

Yeah sometimes it does feel like no one is listening, but im sure i have helped a few people out
