사립 탐정인 해리 엔젤은 어느 날 싸이퍼라는 의뢰인으로부터 자니 페이버릿이라는 사람을 찾아달라는 의뢰를 받게 됩니다. 그리고 자니를 찾기 시작하는 해리 엔젤, 그런데 자니를 찾기 위해 탐문 수사를 하던중 헤리 엔젤이 만났던 사람들은 모두 살해된 체로 발견되고 마는데요.
점점 두려움을 느끼는 시작하는 해리 엔젤, 그는 우연히 자신의 지인을 통해 의뢰인 싸이퍼가 찾는 자니에 대한 이야기를 전해듣게 됩니다. 그리고 점점 자신의 의뢰인이 찾고 있는 자니라는 인물이 보통 사람과는 다른 사람임을 알게 됩니다. 점점 미궁속으로 빠져드는 해리 엔젤...
괴기스럽고 기묘하지만, 잊을 수 없는 미감을 지녔습니다. 특히나 상영된지 벌써 30년이 넘은 작품인데도 불구하고 비주얼적인 면은 지금봐도 충격적일 정도로 압도적인 힘을 지니고 있습니다.
헤리 엔젤의 환장 장면과 끝을 알 수 없이 밑으로 향하는 엘리베이터 씬은 지금도 영화인들 사이에서 회자되는 명장면입니다. 감독은 주술적인 분위기와 종교적인 영성을 전율이 느껴지는 영상미학으로 하나의 프레임안에 담아내고 있습니다.
난해한 이야기와 섹스와 폭력이 난무한다는 이유로 관객들에게는 외면을 당했습니다. 하지만, 작품은 스스로 자신의 가치를 증명하듯 생명력을 부여하며 세계 영화사에 길이 남을 오컬트의 고전으로 남아 있습니다.
미키 루크의 매력적인 젊은 시절이 담겨져 있습니다. 그리고 전설적인 헐리우드 명배우 로버트 드 니로가 의뢰인 싸이퍼 역을 맡아 무게감 있는 연기를 보여주고 있습니다.
