Showcasing censorship resistance

It has been one of those 'up all night' kind of nights as our daughter is ill enough with a flu that she is unable to sleep. My wife and I ran a couple of shifts but unfortunately, there is no sleep-in possibility for me but hopefully the two of them will get another hour or so.

I saw briefly that the hacker account @darkoverlord has been hidden from view on steemit.com. Before people claim censorship though, this is well inline with what Steemit Inc does and should be doing for these kinds of cases as they are a registered company in the US. What is very cool about Steem is that the content of the account is still visible through multiple interfaces and will remain so.

The thing on a decentralized platform like Steem is that while even multiple interfaces could block access to a view of the blockchain, multiple more can be developed to provide it and pretty much anyone can develop a view that allows users to post what they choose. This is why Steem is censorship resistant and this is being showcased now.

While some corporate entities may not legally be able to provide a view of something for various reasons, the independents and anonymous can largely do what they want It is even viable for a group to create their own frontend that allows them to post as they choose and not be censored at all. This in time is going to increasingly be tested across various content groups and in some cases, there is going to be large social issues brought into the conversation, like CP and terrorist activities.

For those that do not know, this is definitely not the first time Steemit Inc has blocked the view of some accounts and ther are multiple instances in the past. Again, these accounts are still viewable on the blockchain, just not through Steemit.com. For those who are concerned by this, it is another reason to move away from the steemit.com interface and onto the multitude of other views of the blockchain.

While still the highest, the viewership through Steemit.com has been falling steadily over the last 6 months or more as more and more interfaces and interactions are coming in through other applications like the ones I linked above. While this isn't great for Alexa ranking numbers which is obviously a terribly irrelevant indicator for a decentralized platform such as this, it is a good sign that the developers and community are pushing out as was the design of the ecosystem and the premise that, applications are the future of Steem.

Now though, with deep and dark circles under my eyes, I am running late for work so will get back to this in the evening.
