Any opportunity?steemCreated with Sketch.

Last night I was at a party for my brother's 50th which is why my sister is in Finland too. It was held at an events hall and there were about 80 friends to bring in the milestone.

There were quite a few of their business associates invited and quite a few who my brother didn't know. He is of course okay with this as it is the way they operate, every opportunity is one to take advantage of to network and give the potential to make a little more money.

What I found interesting was that when I was talking to people throughout the night, those I didn't know (there were many) were only interested in what I could do for them. Not help them, what connections I may have that they could take advantage of or if I can buy some service or another from them. It seems that the people invited were very similar to my brother's family, every opportunity. I am not like this at all and perhaps I should be. In my opinion, there are times and places where it is appropriate to sell yourself in such ways and a birthday celebration is not one.

There was a very good band that started playing about halfway through the night but, most people didn't hear them, they had already left. Once most people had 'worked the room' swapped some cards and got all they could from the opportunity, they left.

I find this behavior off putting in many ways and when it comes to people I do business with, I avoid them like the plague. What I have found over the years as those only looking out for themselves are also those who are the least willing to help others and add real value to anyone other themselves. But, they sell the idea well. The are are kind of like many of the shitcoins that market themselves well but are just a money grab that holds back the cryptocurrency markets.

In my little opinion, these are the people who hold back real value being increased and spread as they narrow their view to the very short-term and burn many bridges in their wake. I have known a few of the people that were there last night for a while and they talk big but, act, very, very small indeed. Many would fall into the category of scammers, even though they are 'prominent' in the community.

For many, prominence and reputation are attractive qualities and blind many people to the actual products they sell and whether they are valuable at all. It is a smoke and mirror situation that hurts those that buy-in to the lies, even though they may never know it. We seem to be continually chasing to get next to fame and fortune and even pay for it thinking that if we rub shoulders with celebrity, we too will enjoy the rewards. This is largely untrue.

At Steemit we can see this a lot where those with many followers attract more followers regardless of their content, their content regardless of quality gets support by a small circle of other big names who also benefit from this which in turn attracts more followers to the group. Nonsense gets voted to the moon and resteemed over and over even though the value is actually missing.

Last night, there was a Member of Parliament at the party, a person I have known in several situations and has never failed to be a snake in the grass who is all too willing to back stab those that have trusted him if he can climb a political rung. Some say this is politics.

To me, it seems that even though many want to build something different at Steemit, very few are actually doing anything different here than what happens in the arenas they are trying to avoid. Perhaps we should rethink how we interact here or we run a very big risk of becoming a replica of exactly what we have run from.

If a decentralized community acts like a centralized one, for all intents and purposes, nothing has changed. Just some quick thoughts as they arrive.

You always give me something else to consider with every post.

Sounds rather dreary.
If we must play socio-political games here to succeed, this will be a short trip for me. I am absolutely not suited for them. Like an old dog, I will not learn the trick!

I agree. I have never been an 'if you can't beat em, join em' type. My bank account plays testament to this.

Mine also. I see it as being the fruit of honesty.

I'm not sure if the behaviour on steemit is better or worse considering every interaction is recorded for posterity and cannot be erased. At least in the real world there is some way of masking it but here it seems like there is no shame at all.

As with the real world also, reputation does not come from moral or immoral behaviour but popularity and appearance. It is to my own shame that my own reputation score on steemit bothers me so much. I try to conduct myself as best as I can and play the game fairly yet some who have joined after me have already exceeded my score by engaging in behaviour that I myself find immoral.

I'm not here to beat anybody and I'm not here to join anybody. So why am I here? If I'm here to try and make a difference then I'm not doing a very good job and if I'm here to make money then I'm not doing a very good job. Why the fuck am I here Taraz?? :)

I really wish I could write the way you do my friend. You have a great way of expressing your frustration politely. :)

I feel exactly the same way sometimes. Why?!? But we are here for a reason: to be our brilliant Self no matter what! It is so hard, I know, believe me. But at the end of it all the only thing that is real and eternal is the person we were in this lifetime.

I think people underestimate their role here and how their content, attempts and interactions can effect the real world also. I would think that you for example have somewhat changed your life approach because of your various movements through this platform. These things may seem small and insignificant but I feel that in the larger scheme of things, these small actions matter.

When it comes to the morality of action, that is a very long conversation :)

I like this post! thank you :)

Isnt the way to fight it is to create more quality content like yours and support other people quality content? Over a long time, people will work harder creating original posts because they know that they will be most rewarded for it!

Please tell me, am I doing something different in my posts?
@paps

Considering you joined in August, you seem to be getting a fair bit of traction. This is definitely not a fast return platform for most. If you are going for followers, your comments will have a decent effect. If you are going for quality followers however, they often are turned away by the linking to own content. I would suggest spending time in steemit.chat getting to know people. There are lots of rooms where you may find a lot of interesting people.

I do that as well ^^
Also in discord and other platforms!
I also try my best to support quality posts, the same way I wish other people will support mine. I think we should all stick together and make steemit a place where quality matters!
Thank you for great post and comment and for the tips of course :) Will keep working hard on my posts and promoting.

Followed you 😎

You have some interesting content and I am sure that in time you will attract a decent following of like minds. Just like in NLP where subtle shifts in language can create new thinking and large behavioural movements, here too it is a step at a time and there is a little experimentation involved.

Very good post @tarazkp. Why do people act like this? I don't know, but I know I am the opposite of most people and proud of it. Though it makes my life more difficult as swimming against the current is bound to do, I can look at myself in the mirror and be proud of who I am.

And it is that look in the mirror that matters. Many need to see others looking in it at themselves before they dare take a peek.

Thanks for this post, I absolutely agree with you. I try to avoid that type of people and got rid of all so called friends that are like that. And that makes my life way more positive, with friends i can rely on. About Steemit community , in the beginning i thought it's a great project, but going through piles of meaningless posts that have so much upvotes i realised, that at the moment, it's not promising at all.

It is what we make it and where it goes from here is also somewhat up to each of us.

Ok, srsly, no wonder you are one of my favorites here on Steemit.
The people that give without first asking are the people that deserve to receive.
Great post.
PS: don't u dare to upvote this reply like every reply I left u. I will not look for a week at you posts as a protest.
Can you recommend me more steemians like you instead?

I would look at a couple who have interesting feeds (but different) I follow.

@dwinblood and @denmarkguy

We tend to approach life both very differently and with overlaps.

I upvote all that are worthy comments. Even the ones that disagree and criticise.

Well, I hate you! That was not a worthy comment in my opinion.
Now I have to chose between being a hypocrite and not looking at your posts for a week.
So thanks a lot!

PS: Thanks for the recommendations!

Well, you should know by now I like posing tough questions ;)

Ah! Now I Know you are not reading my wacko stuff lately to recommend me also. Since I not tend to approach life nor differently nor with overlaps with anybody else truly alive around. LoL :)

I appreciate your insight on the subject.
