Recycling do you do it? Reduce, reuse, repurpose.

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Hey guys. Today I'd like to talk about something that's really close to my  heart.

One huge factor for the way I feel about recycling the way I do, started a  few years ago when my wife and I travelled through Bali, Indonesia. It all  started with a boat rider from Sanur to Nusa Penida - probably one of the  most epic islands that I have ever seen. Once we arrived on the beach  looking for the booking office of the boat company, the street did not only  contain about 3 000 000 scooters parked on the stretch of beachfront but it  was also littered something crazy-like. Once we started the ocean crossing  to the first island, the litter was not left behind. Instead, the whole way  there, sh*t was floating all across the ocean.

The problem seemed to get worse the more we travelled across the island. We went snorkelling that afternoon, and I, despite the issue of littering, have to add that I've never seen a reef quite like this. It was the most amazing dream-like experience we have ever had. Getting to the reef is  about a 100m swim over the seaweed plantation and then in all of 5 minutes we saw just about every single characterfrom finding Nemo.

The problem seemed to get worse the more we travelled across the island. We went snorkelling that afternoon, and I, despite the issue of littering, have to add that I've never seen a reef quite like this. It was the most amazing dream-like experience we have ever had. Getting to the reef is about a 100m swim over the seaweed plantation and then in all of 5 minutes we saw just about every single character from finding Nemo. Floating out there in total and utter amazement it didn't take long to notice that there are huge pieces of plastic drifting away in this wonderland. So I did what any self-respecting person on Earth would do, and I started grabbing them and filling up my board shorts pockets. This was what we then did at least three times a day for a week. And yes, you guessed it the plastic never seemed to stop. However, as if that was not bad enough, my wife and I travelled on to the next island, be Gili Air. We decided to walk around the island, which takes all of about one and a half hour. As we were walking, we started picking up plastic, in under 500m we found a huge bag and filled it with plastic.

  • That's not the weird part. The kicker was when some of the other travellerson the island sitting in their luxury resorts looked at us as if we were crazy for picking up the plastic. Now you have to understand that most of these people come year every year for their annual retreat, so my question is this: am I crazy for trying tomake a difference or are do these people make themselves out to be clueless to think that the island would remain clean and beautiful when they return? Forgive me if I seem a bit upset, but does change not start with every single one of us? My wife, my brother-in-law and myself started an NPO with which we want to address this kind of issue as well as helping animal rescue service with funding. I’m linking a video below of some of the proposed ideas I have come across in which we can simultaneously reduce the amount of plastic waste, reuse it to make products that the locals could sell back to the tourists which they can then put back into their luggage and take home.By doing this, we can elevate the influx of waste coming to the islands as the island just do not have the infrastructure to deal with this issue. Each day a new boatload of fresh products are off loaded to cater for the people visiting the island. The problem is that so little of it ever gets properly disposed of.

If we made it easy, simple and transparent to help us achieve a cleaner, healthier world for ourselves for years to come, would you consider joining us? What would you be willing to do to aid us in this project?I hope if you have read this piece, you might feel a bit more enlightened and keen to make a change to you daily habits and the way in which you consume products. I look forward to reading your comments and getting to know you guys better.

Good man!!!

That underwater pic looks amazing dude and yeah, littering is definitely a massive issue.

You're absolutely NOT CRAZY for wanting to clean up the mess whilst on vacation. This is something that resonates with myself and my girlfriend as well and great job for taking the initiative. Last year I was in Iceland....a pristine country...but as the tourist boom had arrived I'd noticed an uptick in refuse scattered around since my first visit. I found myself picking up cigarette butts and plastic items as well. I try to use plastic grocery store bags as my garbage bags. This way it 1. Cuts down on my garbage output and 2. re-uses those bags. I'm always recycling as much as I can while at work (food service business's small and large create so much plastic waste) & I try to avoid all plastic use at home. I've got a glass water bottle & re-use or repurpose as many things as I can. I'd be very interested in helping out and joining you if you'd started a recycling project. Great post. Thank you.

Thanks, Joseph.
I'll most definitely get in touch as soon as we have more momentum.
One simple thing we did in Thailand this year was to simply get tote bag as seen below.

Because at every shop they want to give you a plastic bag even if you buy something that is already in a plastic bag. So that's a simple but effective strategy anyone can implement no matter where you live. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

Have you heard of the new LocTote bags? I bought them off their kickstarter and it's this cool stretchy and theft proof travel bag that can hold a lot of stuff. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/967296713/the-theft-proof-drawstring-backpack I'm planning on using it for my next trip. My girlfriend carries a similar tote bag to yours and it works great for her needs.
