#1 Coober Pedy, South Australia, Australia
First, @metametheus takes us to the mining town of Coober Pedy in the Australian outback. This town looks apocalyptic, with rusting machinery and small heaps of sandy rubble interspersed with rooftops, disused water tanks, TV antennae, and ventilation shafts. He stays in a local dugout, which is a home carved into the side of a small hill, that naturally regulates the extreme desert temperatures. Coober Pedy is renowned worldwide for its opals, which scholars now think were formed from the resulting acidification of the land when the inland sea surrounding it dried up millions of years ago.

Next @dfinney takes us to Old Town San Diego in the USA. Established in 1968, not only is Old Town San Diego a neighbourhood, historic site, museum and a shopping/dining district, but it also marks the location of the first Spanish settlement in California. Entry to the park is free allowing visitors to explore the many historic buildings from the 1800s. The architecture has a distinct south of the border vibe, and throughout the year, it hosts a variety of entertainers and festivals.

Finally, @lizanomadsoul takes us hiking in the Alps in southern Germany. Starting at Walchensee Lake, her goal is to reach Heimgartenhütte, take a break, then cross over to Herzogstand. After 1.5 hours of hiking up the mountain, she stops to enjoy the view and have breakfast. Next came the steep climb to Heimgartenhütte, but she made it in time for lunch. The views from Heimgartenhütte are stunning in all directions, with Munich visible on a clear day such as this. From here, she heads over to Herzogstand before descending the mountain and taking a quick, well-earned swim in the lake before heading home.
