Statues of the Charles Bridge, the iconic landmark of Prague, Czech Republic

Spanning over the Vltava River in the historic center of Prague, the Charles Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks and most visited and photographed tourist attractions of the city.

Built between 1357 and 1402 (to replace the Judith Bridge that was standing on the very same spot since as early as 1158 until it was damaged by floods in 1342), the Charles Bridge measures 621 m (2,037 ft) long and up to 10 m (33 ft) wide, making it one of the most massive ancient bridges in Europe.

A truly spectacular piece of medieval architecture and engineering, the bridge is decorated with 30 statues that can be found on both sides of it. The statues were added to the bridge at around 1700 but by the course of the time, all of the original pieces have been replaced with replicas. Yet, they still retain their beautiful ancient appearance that gives the bridge the unique, somewhat magical atmosphere, especially if you visit this place very early in the morning when there are no tourists.

Let me show you a few shots of the statues that I captured during my last visit to Prague a couple of months ago.

As you can see in the last two photos, I failed to get to the bridge early enough to enjoy it without being surrounded by crowds of tourists but hopefully, you can still feel the enchanting atmosphere of this extraordinary place :)
