Tourist Sofia. Lviv Bridge

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

In Sofia, many interesting tourist sites. To most of them, tourists tend to purposefully, and bypass some pass without suspecting anything. In this case, go through them. I am referring to the legendary Sofia Bridge "Lviv Bridge", along which all travelers go or travel from two stations to the city center.

Livy Bridge

This bridge has recently been restored, the place has become very picturesque and you can show it without hesitation and talk about it.

The bridge was built in 1891 by the architect Václav Prošek, 260 000 gold leva were spent on its construction in those days. Bronze figures of lions were made by the Viennese firm "Wagner Bira".

Prior to the bridge Lybov there was also a bridge called "Shareniat Bridge", which means motley.

What is significant about this place

Secondly, the later history of this place abounds in creepy legends.

In the times of the Ottoman yoke, criminals were executed at this place. The Ottomans had such a tradition: to arrange executions of those guilty of those gates to which they entered the city.

The bodies of the dead Bulgarians, who defended Sredets (old Sofia) from the Ottoman army, were dumped in the Vladayaisk river. And therefore the river became known as "Kanl Dere," which means a bloody river.

In the 19th century, around this bridge, were hanged the revolutionaries who participated in the April uprising that broke out against the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria. It is said that four lions symbolize these heroes.

So, you will be in Sofia, stroke the lions on the Liiv bridge - they will be pleased, but you can feel the connection of times.

Nice post, great pics!

Just a small correction:

name of the bridge is: Лъвов мост which is to be spelled in EN : Lavov, not Lviv.

wikipedia says: Lions' Bridge (Bulgarian: Лъвов мост; Lavov most) is a bridge over the Vladaya River in the centre of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, built 1889-1891 by Czech architect Václav Prošek,

Thank you!
