A rather weird New Year's Eve

in #steemexclusive6 months ago

It was a strange New Year's Eve.
You know, I was looking forward to it. I wanted it all to be over, to pass at last. Still, I was hoping it would be quite festive, very symbolic, very strong, not just like that.

But at 7 p.m., when we decided to start the celebration, more or less, there was news, retrospective news of the whole year. I was doing some household stuff by the way while listening to the news - all the government failures, scandals and shenanigans, murders, corruption, unsolved crimes, mafia news, natural disasters...
Well, ok, I don't have much to report about the past year either, other than some personal disasters and apocalypses. But here we are talking about the life of the whole state. And as I have written here before, my personal apocalypses are enough, I have no desire to be constantly overwhelmed with others.
Also, there's something else here. The way these events are presented to us.
They are presented to us as something completely normal, something in the nature of things.
At the end of the year, in retrospect, we are openly told that the state is not working, as if this is something completely normal, in the order of things. Yes, that's okay because it always has been like that.

Unfortunately, I couldn't bear to watch this show until the end, we just changed the channel. To watch some concert. Then we changed the channel again to find the main New Year's show with tag skits and painfully familiar screen faces.

This year the holiday dinner was short, we just ate very quickly for some reason. At first I hoped I could get drunk (you know, because of the nature of the evening) with the little sweet wine I had left, but it proved insufficient, and I did not feel like drinking any other alcohol.

What are we going to do for the rest of the evening? We didn't like the boring holiday programs.
We decided to watch a movie on the computer, leaving the TV screen on so we would still know what was going on in the universal madhouse.

This year there was a Facebook campaign to turn off TVs at 11:55pm - the time the President's speech starts. A very symbolic act of helplessness.
We didn't turn off the TV then. We had ruled it out long before that. We watched the countdown after that speech, poured ourselves some liqueur because this year, on top of everything, we forgot to buy champagne. Then we continued to watch our series. The TV screen was still on.

After 12 p.m., what was happening on television changed somewhat. The first thing I saw was a credits ad. This is the greeting for the Bulgarians for the New Year. Then concerts of singers from the so-called low class music. It has no equivalent in other languages. This is the music that simplifies the population and has a Bulgarian patent.
Wait, I just discovered that this kind of music even has a Wikipedia page, and in Latin it's spelled like this "Chalga". You can read about it yourself if you are interested.
Besides the chalga, on one of the national televisions there was a concert by Lepa Brena and Dragana Mirkovic, Serbian figures from the same controversial past of Bulgaria, when the chalga appears.

I was in shock. Such a throwback to the dark past, those so-called dark and scary years had not happened for a long time. Gone was the Sting concert at the Olympia Hall, which they broadcast for I don't know how many times, or the even older Sheryl Crow concert.
We listened to Lepa Brena, the star of the 80s and her ominous Bulgarian offspring... I really wished I hadn't witnessed that fall.

Again, as is often the case here with my posts, the photos are for illustrative purposes only.

steem.jpgSoul's Detour is a project started by me years ago when I had a blog about historical and not so popular tourist destinations in Eastern Belgium, West Germany and Luxembourg. Nowadays, this blog no longer exists, but I'm still here - passionate about architecture, art and mysteries and eager to share my discoveries and point of view with you.

Personally, I am a sensitive soul with a strong sense of justice.
Traveling and photography are my greatest passions.
Sounds trivial to you?
No, it's not trivial. Because I still love to travel to not so famous destinations.🗺️
Of course, the current situation does not allow me to do this, but I still find a way to satisfy my hunger for knowledge, new places, beauty and art.
Sometimes you can find the most amazing things even in the backyard of your house.😊🧐🧭|

It's just another day. Same shit different day. And after all that is said and done, Life goes on. 😁 Perhaps now you understand a little why I don't celebrate. 😀

Of course I understand. 😊 But you know, in our country they say: "New year, new luck." And everyone hopes for something new, expects it. Then the new year comes and the same shit continues. We all know that nothing will change, but until the end we believe that it will...

Yes, we do keep on hoping rather than waking up to reality. lol 😃

Yes, but I also think that without hope, we are lost. Even if it's just a self-delusion, and it is, we human beings need it. Otherwise, life, as difficult as it is, suddenly will become unbearable for the majority of humanity. So inventing hope as a concept is the lifeline that keeps most of us from sinking forever.

I know. And I understand.

"If not for hope, the heart would die." I can't remember who said that. 😊

Enjoy your weekend.

Have a great weekend you too! Thank you 😊

Undoubtedly, television is becoming a thing of the past.

This year, for the first time in my life, I just slept through the New Year. Against the background of events in the country, there was no desire to celebrate anything. There is no evidence that 2024 will bring an end to the war either. But there is a positive - I got enough sleep 😊

Ha ha, that's a good thing... at least something. So I'm not the only one who wasn't in the mood to celebrate.
I also don't see any prospect of anything getting better next year. I need to stop blindly believing in the magic of this day and "holiday". It has some symbolic meaning, but not magical, for sure.

Same here but I am old 🤣
