Con el apoyo de su padre, a los 19 años se inscribió en la Academia Suiza de París. Pero, al cumplir los 21, suspende sus estudios para cumplir con el servicio militar en Argelia. Allá se enferma de pleuresía y regresa a París.

Luego de su retorno comienza a relacionarse con destacados pintores, entre los que se hallaban: Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir y Frédéric Bazille.

Las obras de Monet, en la década de 1860, tenían un estilo realista; pero luego decidió explorar otras técnicas, las cuales no fueron bien recibidas por los Salones de Arte de París, quienes no aceptaban exponer allí sus lienzos. Esto le generó serios problemas económicos, los cuales comenzaron a solventarse cuando viajó a Londres y conoció al comerciante Paúl Durant-Ruel; quien no solo compraba sus obras, sino que también las promocionaba dentro de su círculo de amistades. Esta relación comercial con Durant-Ruel le permitió a Monet llevar una vida holgada.

En el año 1883 Monet se muda a Giverny con su compañera Alice Hoschedé, los seis hijos que esta había tenido de una relación anterior, y los dos hijos que ambos tuvieron. Pero, Alice no pudo disfrutar de su último hijo, ya que murió en el parto, en el año 1879. Este hecho deprimió mucho al pintor.

Monet fallece a los 86 años, el 5 de diciembre de 1926, en su casa de Giverny.

Tras se deceso se creó la Fundación de Monet para conservar el patrimonio de Giverny y abrirlo al público.

May is the month of flowers and mothers. For this reason, in this initiative of Art and Writing, which reaches its tenth edition, we want to pay tribute to a painter who had a special preference for the theme of gardens; and it is none other than Oscar-Claude Monet.

Monet was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris (France). From the age of 5, his family settled in Normandy, specifically in the city of Le Havre.

With the encouragement of his father, at age 19, he enrolled at the Swiss Academy in Paris. But, when he turns 21, he suspends his studies to fulfill his military service in Algeria. There he falls ill with pleurisy, and returns to Paris.

After his return he began to interact with outstanding painters, among whom were: Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir and Frédéric Bazille.

Monet's works in the 1860s were realistic in style; but he decided to explore other techniques, which were not well received by the Paris Art Salons, who did not accept to exhibit his works. This caused him serious economic problems, which began to be solved when he traveled to London and met the merchant Paúl Durant-Ruel; He not only bought the works of the outstanding painter, but also promoted them within his circle of friends. This business relationship with Durant-Ruel allowed Monet to lead a comfortable life.

In 1883 Monet moved to Giverny with his partner Alice Hoschedé, the six children she had had from a previous relationship, and the two children they both had. But, Alice could not enjoy her last child, since she died in childbirth in 1879. This fact greatly depressed the painter.

In the gardens of Giverny. Monet was inspired to create such famous works as the series of water lilies.

Monet died at the age of 86, on December 5, 1926, at his home in Giverny.

After his death, the Monet Foundation was created to preserve Giverny's heritage and open it to the public.
