DIY: Making a Workbench out of Pallet.

Quick and easy...

I can finally feel it is time to make art again... but of course we have this little problem for a lack of DRY space.

I think like an artist, I feel like an artist and I am nuts like an artist... I basically have all the traits of an artist (including an ever wondering mind), but I haven't been creating anything for far too long now!

So It's time to expand and de-clutter my shop! After all, the point of building a nulti-familly homestead with a makerspace is (in part) to have all the tools and space to create whater we want to create!

I got one of those tents you see at farmers markets and festivals. I put the 10x10 foot tent up just outside the existing shed (my little workshop) to have more space for all the shit I seemed to have accumulated since moving onto the property.

We really need to be more organized before The land of dreams start to look like a junk yard... Though I am told it will keep the property value down, wich means it'll also keep the real estate taxes down!

So, about this bench than,

I found a pallet that fit the bill, and went to work on it. First I made sure I chose a pallet I could cut down the center without having to remove anything:

You see how there are no planks in the middle there? The less work, the easier it is.

Than I measured it and cut it right at 2ft, the center in this case:

Of course not even half way before the first cut, my batteeies on the skill saw ran dry!!!! It's ok, we have hand tools too. The pull saw worked great.

Once I had two halves of a pallet, I screwd them into a scrap piece of plywood I had laying around waiting to have a purpose, cut two pieces of an old 2x3 about 2 feet long with 45° angles cut at both ends and VOILA:

It's not stable enough so I'll have to cut two more angle pieces and see how that works. What I like about this is the fact that everything, even the screws were sourced for free and saved from being sent to a landfill!!!

You gotta love how versatile a pallet is. Great idea and practical too.

Yeah so versatile. I want to make more things...

Thanks

Repurposed is awesome! Maybe a couple of boards across the bottom of the plywood to help support it and to add just a little stability to the legs as well after screwed into the 45 degree boards? Just a thought. Well done!

good idea, I will frame the the plywood eventually to make that bit more sturdy for sure. Thanks

Thanks Nate, I have about 10 of them left right now but we have a spot near us that has them in ampile for people to pick up all the time.

Oh yeah! Nice!! Are wooden pallets still a "thing" in the so-called first world? Here they're mostly now made from recycled plastics. The wooden ones are EXPENSIVE and we need to pay for them, even second hand. They're super easily attacked by termites so generally we head to the local welding shop who will knock up a frame for under $20. Life is soooo different in the different corners of the globe, no?

Oh yeah, they're a thing here. Plastic ones are EXPENSIVE, but I pick up stacks of wood ones from the Methodist church across town all the time. They're always throwing away a half dozen or so every couple weeks.

Yeah same thing with that spot by us!

Here there's something like a pallet mafia. People that gather thrown away pallets for free and then sell them super expensive. We have the pallet furniture fashion to blame for that. And Pinterest.

haha excellent... blaming pinterest! You guys are known for a bit of a mafia thing!

Yeah, we have the same stuff here. Some folks make a good living off of pallets. I heard a guy on a podcast once that did that for $4k a month! Not a whole super fortune, but it worked well for him, and he didn't have a boss and didn't work full time hours.

Yep it's still a thing here... My cousins in England would collect specific palettes, the ones with large cubes holding it all together. They were scraping them for £5 each.

I wish we could get welding done like that for 20 bucks. Big difference for sure, I remember having a piece of our brakes machined in Chile one time when we broke down... took the guy about two hours to fabricate the part and it was cheap.
